Starting PG...

Post#1 » by winter_mute_13 » Wed Mar 14, 2018 10:46 pm

... for the rest of the season. Is it going to be CoJo? Seems to be the plan.

Pacers are 10-4 since CoJo took over as starter when DC was injured, 11-4 overall for the season. As a starter, CoJo's numbers aren't that impressive: 9.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 3.5apg in 33 minutes, vs DC's 12.6ppg, 2.7rpg, 5.3apg in 30 minutes. But the defense seems noticeably better. And check out the 5-man plus-minus:

The group of CoJo-Dipo-Bojan-Thad-Myles has a netRTG of +14.4 in 305 minutes.
The group of DC-Dipo-Bojan-Thad-Myles has a netRTG of -0.5 in 498 minutes.

(numbers from Basketball Reference)

Seems pretty conclusive, no?

Kind of sucks for DC to lose his spot due to injury, which is actually the second time around it's happened to him (he lost his starting job to George Hill after an injury during his first stint with the Pacers). On the plus side he seems to be playing pretty well as a reserve.

if it takes the ball out of Lances hands on the second unit, it's okay with me.

Collison's the better PG, but Joseph fits the starters better it seems. We don't really need scoring from that spot with the starters and his defense seems to have particularly helped Myles. Joseph's really not a starting level PG, but it's not like Collison is one of the best.

Nate almost always closed games with Joseph, so he knew the fit is better from the start. It's just tough to bench someone especially with the level of chemistry the team started with. Now it seems it shouldn't be an issue unless Collison expects the spot back.

When Collison is ready, I'd give him his spot back. It is about minutes played, not who is starting. Plus, the fit was working pretty darn well either way, so I don't think it is a big deal.

I see both sides. Either way has trade offs. I do worry about CoJo's shot being streaky lately and Oladipo has been tossing up tons of bricks. In the playoffs this team is gonna have to hit some shots or the defense is gonna realize they can pack the paint.

I like Cojo as the spot up shooter in the 2nd unit with Lance as the ball handler, actually. I think Nate was making the right call of using Joseph in late game situations though.

Lance must attack. I hate it when he takes early 3s.

Ah, DC is getting George Hill'd all over again. Lol.

He's such a professional though, shouldn't raise a stink either way.

Logical decison... DC is average player with bad defense and COJO fit better with starting unit... when you have Dipo you dont need ball dominant PG, so as long we are wining with Co, we should leave him in starting 5...

I like Joseph as the starter. His size and nose for the ball gives the starting unit a little more toughness. And agree that Collison might get the ball out of Lances hands some when the second unit plays.

we played small ball last night matching down with the raps. DC and CoJo were on the floor together with Vic.

I noticed that too, and we played Booker some at center....more out of necessity than design though.

Big Al looked winded out there real bad lol.

Yeah the 2 PGs were in and Vic was bringing it up the floor. Kind of weird, but that's just how it played out.

We've rolled with DC and Cojo in the backcourt for significant time all season.
