Pacers Sign Doug McDermott

Post#1 » by glasket » Sun Jul 1, 2018 5:27 am

Dougie McBuckets a pacer. 3 years $21m
He flew Under the radar. Is a great shooter and a decent signing but certainly feels like a Plan B type signing.

I kind of hate it. I like Gay at one year for 10 and Harris at 2 years for 8 apiece better.

But, he's played 20+ minutes a game for his career while shooting over 2.5 threes a game at a 40% clip. That's his plus. Also, it seems weird to jump on a guy like this to start FA, but he did overlap with Oladipo in OKC the previous year. I'd assume Victor gets at least a heads up on the Pacers plans and he must have had some useful input for this to be a priority? I'm just trying to make myself feel better.

I'm not too thrilled either but maybe this move will make more sense next year after everybody expires.

What in the world

The team has been preparing for this moment since last off season, with the signing of the team friendly contracts of Bojan and DC, and this is the culmination of it all

Like I just posted in the other thread, think this is a good move for us.

He adds some shooting and will be happy standing in a corner and spacing the floor.

Shooting gets paid in the league, so I'm ok with the contract. Might even look like a bargain this time next year.

McBuckets seems a little one-dimensional, but then I thought the same about Bogey, and that signing worked out pretty well. Interesting that the 2 new guys so far (Holiday and McDermott) look like potential long term replacements for DC and Bogey, respectively.

In isolation, this is probably a good move. A little disappointing though after the Aaron Gordon talk. I had hopes that the Pacers will try to sign a $20m potential star rather than 3 bench guys splitting the money. But maybe there aren't any potential stars available. As OP says, this feels more like a plan B.

Still plenty of FA movement to go though to see how things play out.

Not too bad, I think. He doesn't have the versatility of Joe Harris but I think he's the better shooter just by a tiny bit. And he's got a defined role.

However, I don't think he's an upgrade over Lance.

That's a weird comparison. They are very different players with different roles. I really don't think McDermott is intended to replace Lance's role.

In terms of money, we didn't need to waive Lance to sign McDermott. And indeed, as long as Lance remains unsigned and we don't acquire another guard, he could still return to the Pacers.

With a back up SF, we need a Back up SG. Reddick or Caldwell Pope?

I like it. Wanted Joe Harris but it seems like he really liked his situation in Brooklyn. Dallasfans say he played well there and we desperatly need a shooter of the bench. Bogey really ran out of gas in the playoffs. If we can teach him to play competent defense this deal will look good. 7 Mio is nothing in todays league especially with the cap jumping again next year. In Prich i trust.
Lets hope we got some more deals in place (AG sign and trade cough). Another target might be Tyreke Evans for creating of the bench..

At 7M per year this really can't be a horrible signing. Easily movable contract. He's a great shooter, and maybe in the right type of system like Indiana he can shine like Bojan has.

Listen, man.

Russell Westbrook is clearly the King Herod of Oklahoma City. Anyone who even had a chance to shine didn't thrive there. Look at the haul you got from the Paul George trade.

Something tells me that if the Pacers could have fit him in that trade, they would have. Instead, he winds up on the same team in free agency?

That can't be coincidence.

He's a smart player.

That's an interesting point. I imagine that McDermott's improvement in Dallas factored into the Pacers' interest though. Maybe they didn't like him as much in OKC?

When he came out of.college I thought he would be better than he’s been. Thought the same thing about Vic. Still have to admit my first thought, this is it?

I totally agree. I was referring to the first wing off the bench role in general and the rationale behind Lance not getting the team option in hopes of bringing in an "upgrade".

I just feel that with McDermott, we'd get someone that is better offensively but lacks all the other qualities Lance was providing. It would be hard to replace Lance with a single player unless it is someone with the same skill set ala Tyreke Evans.

Gotcha.

Presumably if McBuckets is 8th man instead of Lance, then the second team offense would change to incorporate more catch-and-shoots instead of Lance-type plays. But I agree that the roster needs another guy with the Lance skill set (Tyreke would be nice and a direct upgrade), fortunately the Pacers still have some FA money to play with.

I have to agree with this. Really good shooter from distance and a very reliable free throw shooter. Moves well without the ball. Will help keep the second unit from getting stagnant on offense. Think about last year's second unit, when we were hoping and praying that Sabonis, Lance or someone would hit a three. That is what this guy solves.

Defensively, we have to hope the coaching staff can help him improve the same way Bojan did last year. Bojan made terrific improvement on defense, so maybe we can get a bit of the same from McDermott.

so we've gone from Joey Buckets to McBuckets. I'm fine with this. we need a backup 3 who could shoot and we got one.

as for those asking if this is all, I'd say it may not be. it's the morning of the first day. Lance could return. Guards are still out there. Worst case CoJo plays 2 and Holiday gets a shot at the 2nd unit, but I doubt we're done.

Im shocked this is the first move. Not too shocked at the interest. I like this better than giving Ariza 15 million for even one year. Denver hurried to take Barton off the market. Im thinking he will be solid as a spacer.
