Myles Turner

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Tue Sep 25, 2018 3:50 am

I know, another player thread, but one moderator said they didn't mind them at all, and honestly, on the Suns forum it works well because if people do come around and want to read about a player and there are recent tweets/news or even game highlights about them, they have it contained, instead of it getting buried in one busy thread.

However, my question is, what are your expectations from him this year? I am intrigued. I'm working through a different fantasy draft on the Suns forum (I am in a dynasty one with 8 keepers so he is surely a keeper for someone) but now am also doing a redraft league. I will take one of 3 centers possibly with my next pick, and I like him the best, though each of the others have better stats in some areas.

Where do you think he improves this year? What do you think his numbers look like? The only think he compares unfavorably in to the other two is rebounds, and in one to assists. FG% is lower, but that's because he hits 3s so it's good.

half full or half empty? reading here for opinions on Myles will get you a lot of trade him sentiment that others including me think is very misplaced. he's saying all the right things as camp starts and his body shows a lot of hard work over the summer, but it doesn't look like an extension to his contract is imminent suggesting only IMHO that he has the potential to earn a max contract but hasn't done so yet. perhaps he never will. the coaches are hoping his rebounding improves and he can be more physical inside and he's received the message but the jury is still out.

as for fantasy, I suppose it depends upon the rules. I've never played in draft leagues although I played in a salary cap league for several years. in salary cap, I think I'd get more points per dollar playing Sabonis than Turner. does that translate in a draft league to trying to get Sabonis in a lower round? never having played that game, I just don't know. whether they can play together on the court is a big open question for the Pacers. playing them together in fantasy could make a lot of sense with the right rules (like playing a running back and receiver from the same team can work in football). when one has a bad night, it's likely the other will balance that out.

I'm afraid Turner has already hit his peak.

Not to say that's a bad thing, but I wouldn't expect much more from him than what he did last season.

Let's all just hope he stays healthy enough to last all year.

Turner still has some room to grow, just needs to work on being stronger as a rim protector and a more consistent rebounder. I could see his offense taken a step or two forward this year too.

His peak? He's 22.

Yes, because I just don't believe he'll ever be much more than the player he is right now.

Again, there's nothing wrong with that, he's (to me) just not the franchise, elite big I once hoped for.

He is only 22 like you stated, so I really hope I'm proven wrong.

I'm not nearly as down on Turner as some of the fanbase can be. There are plenty of things he does well. He was already a decent shooter and shotblocker. He improved his 3 point shot and his physicality last year. He's got things to work on, but what player at 22 doesn't? Oladipo at 22 certainly did. That said, some people will inevitably be disappointed if he only becomes a solid starter and not Anthony Davis. He was sort of the most accessible face for the franchise after PG's departure, and I think that caused general expectations for him to get a little out of focus.

That said, I don't know about fantasy. I wouldn't be surprised if he posted better numbers across the board this year than any other year in his career, but probably modest gains in each category due to natural progression and not an MIP-level jump.

I'm very optimistic Myles will d velop into the player we want him to be.

I'm not sure why we are so obsessed with a big guy not dominating this early in his career when he's a good 4 years away from reaching his peak. There's plenty of time and he has a great skill set for the modern game. Hopefully his program over summer gives him that agility to put the ball on the ground and provide better coverage on D.

If anyone ever had Anthony Davis expectations then they are going to be very disappointed. That is quite silly IMO.

Myles was held back by fluke injuries and the emergence of Oladipo that stunted his development last year. If healthy, I think his numbers will no doubt be better.

So far not too impressed by Myles as of someone who should be projected to earn big money. I am not a fan of his ISO play.

Pretty sure that was by design and due to the fact that Houston had their guards defending the post.

an article in the Athletic made the point that waiting to extend Myles gives us more cap room next summer to bring in an expensive free agent. we sign Myles last.

I understood the 2019 timing but for some reason didn't put it together with not doing an extension this month. it does create a risk that someone will mess up your timing with an offer that you have to match quickly but that's a lesser risk than the injury risk of an early deal.

McMillan was asked about Turner and Sabonis playing simultaneously. He essentially said it won’t happen often. Still seems like such a waste of talent.
