Seems like a long term bargain to me. I was expecting well more than $20m average, so, to me, well worth sacrificing a little cap space this summer to lock in a bargain.

If memory serves, that is a very similar contract to what Victor signed in OKC. putting the two of them on equal footing makes a lot of sense to me. there is the cap room issue next summer, but I'm in no hurry to bring in an outsider for more money than Victor will be getting.

WOW I need to digest this some more to give a better opinion but I did not expect him to get an extension.

Vic had signed for 4/84, so yeah, but also on a year where the cap was much lower.

Cap that year was $99m for the first year of Dipo’s new contract. So, his average salary was 21% of the cap. Turner will come out with an average salary of $20m per when the cap in his first year is projected to be $109m so he’s at 18% of cap. Both were eligible for extensions of up to 25% of the cap.

Also, if it is $80m and operates in a normal raise manner (first year salary would start at Just under $18m), we could still open up a full max salary slot if we were to move on from all our expiring contracts. We would then again have the room exception after that.

Or, we could manipulate the cap in a hundred manners by renouncing some, not all of our guys, or re signing all of them. Lots of flexibility to do, well, whatever we want.

I think a lot depends upon how the point guards play this year. will some combination of Reke, Sumner, and Holiday make DC or CoJo expendible?

similarly, how will Doug and Alize develop? will the draft give us a wing? do we need a big money free agent SF?

we've discussed all these issues elsewhere. the point here is that extending Myles doesn't limit our options next summer.

The 4 yr/$72 mil figure I think is closer number wise to what most people were expecting.

Good for Myles and the Pacers, I think. No reason to let a 22 year old 7 footer test free agency, you already know there's going to be suitors.

If he reaches the potential I think we all believe he has, this could be a very nice contract in the same way Oladipo's did.

Now seeing this contract reported as flat - no raises. Also saw the bonuses described as “unlikely”.

Make of that what you will.

maybe I'm remembering a football rule. but I read unlikely as a cap calculation matter. doesn't the probability of a bonus being earned affect when it counts against cap?

I wasn't expecting an extension to get done either. Well done to both the Pacers and Myles.

4/72 with bonuses is pretty reasonable.

"Unlikely" in cap speak just means that he didn't reach the criteria last season.

I haven’t seen my usual guys report it. Where you seeing it? Flat would be great.

This is a great deal. As Scoot said earlier, a long term bargain is exactly what this deal will turn out to be. As recently as a year ago, Victor's contract was viewed as bloated, as an albatross. A bad contract by a lot of people. Now look, his 20/21 million a year is one of the the best contracts in the league. If he can simply play the same level as he did a year ago for another season, he'd be viewed as maybe a top five contract in the entire league.

I'm not saying I'm expecting Myles to hit Dipo's level, this year, or ever - necessarily. But he won't need to become a superstar to justify this deal.

That being said, I'm expecting Myles to turn in a hell of a campaign this year. I think his summer transformation will be akin to Vic's though, and he will take a HUGE step forward this year - and he will earn serious consideration for this year's MIP, maybe even claiming an All-Star bid in the process.

Or not. But I love this contract, and I'm ready for him to prove so many, many of the doubters wrong.
