For the Pacers this probably doesn't affect anything since I suspect he wasn't a priority resign. If he were under contract for another year what would have happened? Is the contract just void or is the team still on the hook for the cap?

Contract would’ve been terminated/voided from here on out.

Also, it’s possible this could’ve been a 1st offense. Or that he was possibly in the system for something else like marijuana and didn’t comply with testing after a new drug test showing a violation of drug of abuse.

Man, Pritchard really made a mistake on that one. He signed Tyreke based on his numbers on a bad team, and his raw talent. He completely misjudged his character. Nothing against Tyreke, but he was just an awful fit, and it was obvious from the start. Pritchard talks about culture all the time, and about finding the guys that fit into it, and then he makes a mistake like that. He needs to make better decisions going forward. There was no reason to let Lance go, just to sign someone like Tyreke. At much bigger price too. Those are weak decisions, just to have an alibi that he signed a "big name". It's not about big names, it's all about culture.

Well, I wasn't expecting him to come back this year, but I certainly wasn't expecting this either.

I feel bad for Tyreke, but reading about the NBA's drug program, it seems reasonably fair.

"Drugs of Abuse program: There are two stages to the Drugs of Abuse program. First-time patients enter Stage 1 of the program. A player who has already completed Stage 1 enters Stage 2. A player who has already completed Stage 2 is dismissed from the league. A player in the program can also advance one stage for disregarding his treatment program. Players continue to receive their salary in Stage 1. Players in Stage 2 are suspended during their inpatient care and for at least six months of their aftercare, until the medical director certifies that the player is ready to play. Players who fail to comply with their program are suspended in Stage 1, and dismissed from the league in Stage 2."

The penalty being dismissal with no intermediate suspension suggests that Tyreke wasn't cooperating with the NBA's drug treatment program. Maybe getting banned is the wake up call he needs... hope he has some people looking out for him.

From the same link, it seems unlikely that the drug offense is marijuana (only goes up to suspensions) or PEDs (which start with a 25 game suspension for a first offense).

To be fair to Tyreke, I don't think we used him in a way that best took advantage of his strengths as a player. To be fair to us, he didn't really make the most of all the opportunities he was given, and if he had, his role might have expanded more.
