Rebounding help

The Pacers last season were the 7th worst rebounding team in the league, averaging 43 rebounds a game. https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2019.html

With the addition of TJ Warren, it’s expected that the Pacers will walk away from Thad Young. At least some people have speculated that. Young last season averaged 6.5 boards/game which was third best on the team. I wonder how they plan on going to fix that? If they lose Young, it just creates another hole in an already weak spot.

Thoughts?

Looking at raw rebounding numbers is a bad idea because it ignores the effect that Pace has on it (just like any other raw statistic). What we should look at, instead, is Rebound Percentage. What percent of the misses does a team rebound? That gives us a much more accurate picture since it isn't affected by Pace. And this is how we ranked in Rebound Percentage this past season -> https://stats.nba.com/teams/advanced/?sort=REB_PCT&dir=-1&Season=2018-19&SeasonType=Regular%20Season

We were 18th. We rebounded 49.9% of the misses throughout the season. We were a below average rebounding team but not a spectacularly bad one.

Personally, I believe that we're going to go with a Sabonis/Turner/Bitadze big man trio. Sabonis' minutes will go significantly up as he will start at PF and still play his role as the focal point of the second unit. Turner's minutes will also go up a bit. If I were to bet, I'd say that Myles plays 30ish minutes and Domas plays 28ish, perhaps even 30ish. I also expect Bitadze to play some minutes if we go by this configuration. Perhaps somewhere around 14-16 minutes. If we do it like that then I expect our rebounding to improve. Thad wasn't a good rebounder and he was part of some of our worst rebounding units. If his minutes are mainly taken over by Domas and Goga then our rebounding should improve since both of them are much better rebounders than Thad.

I do expect TJ Warren to play minutes at PF but I don't expect him to start at PF. He'll play back-up minutes at PF in the vein that Bojan played back-up minutes at PF at times last year.

If we indeed go with TJ Warren in Thad's place in the starting lineup and we keep using Domas like we did last year while having Goga take over KOQ's role then yes, our rebounding should be worse. I don't expect us to go that route but, hey, you never know.

We'll lose Thad but Sabonis will step into the starting lineup. Our starting lineup should improve their rebounding with Turner and Sabonis on the floor.

The bench will have Goga and Leaf so we should be okay. Leaf has shown he is a capable rebounder and Goga has the size and length to do the job...and they say he is ready to contribute.

We also don't know what other moves that will be made.
