I hope you guys aren’t banking on Leaf being productive.

I think Leaf can be productive playing behind Turner while Goga adjusts to the speed of the NBA. a bigger question is whether he can be productive behind Sabonis (but see trade topics) and I think he can assuming we create twin tower schemes.

Not banking, but he's slowly progressed year over year and was showing at the end of last year that he at least deserves to be a rotation player.
Hopes for realistic growth. Not banking, in the least. But also, we don't really have any other options right now?

Hopefully I’m wrong. I just don’t think Leaf ever ends up being a rotational player. Same for Sumner

Leaf already was a rotational player decently well post all star break last year. In those 21 games, he put up 11/5/3 on 53/38/67 shooting and a 121/115 ORtg/DRtg, with an overall +- of +5.4. That's very much a rotational player. Not a 6th man, for sure, but a primary backup for sure.

Re: Bench production
I'm probably in the minority here, and i hate to put too much on one game to start the season, but i was again unimpressed with Aaron Holiday's play last night. I've never been impressed with him, from summer league to his rookie season last year. I came in hoping he would show signs of being a player that can give Brogdon some relief, but in the limited time he played he was still just meh to me.
I was far more impressed with Sumner, who got to play like 15 more minutes then Holiday.
Even back when Lance was just a project and only playing few minutes here and there or garbage time, he showed flashes of being very raw but signs of he could do some damage in this league. I just don't see that from Holiday.

Re: Bench production
I've gone from thinking we were very deep to thinking we have a real second unit problem. maybe it is just new combinations but I sure haven't been happy with what I've seen recently. now Vic will help a lot if only by pushing Lamb down a level. perhaps Sumner and Lamb can be a decent second unit backcourt. if not, Brogcon, Victor, and Sumner might be an okay 3 man rotation.
we knew we had a problem at backup 4. Is the best hope that Goga once in shape will be good enough to play serious minutes in a 3 big man rotation?

Re: Bench production
I like Goga as a talent but for his rookie season, i have zero expectations. Jokic was 20 his rookie season and played solid minutes (21) and contributed quite a bit (10pts, 7reb) but i don't think Goga is that level of player. Think it'll take time with him.

Re: Bench production
It would have been helpful if Nate had played anyone other than Myles and Domas at the bigs, save for 3 minutes Leaf got. I understand both were playing well, but they were gassed at the end.
And yeah, Aaron was all sorts of terrible. It took all of half a quarter for Nate to be forced to go to McConnell, who played far better. Totally out of control and trying to do way too much. I'd like to say it was nerves, but he's 23 and has played enough high level ball that he should not have been that bad. He's not a PG and we should utilize him as a shooter with Sumner handling the ball.

Re: Bench production
Who could they have played? There is no Kyle O'Quinn sitting down the bench anymore. They are banking on Goga to develop and for Leaf to have a make it or break it type season.

I saw some good things from Sampson in one of the exhibition games. It could come to giving him a chance.

I'm not a big believer in Leaf at this point but he only got 3 minutes. He wasn't good in those minutes but I'm not sure what he's supposed to do if he doesn't see the court.Grang33r wrote:Who could they have played? Re: Bench production
You can say what you want about McConnell being better than Holiday - but it makes no sense to play McConnell ahead of Holiday.
McMillan is so bad in putting his young players in positions to succeed. At least he's shown some confidence in Sumner.

Re: Bench production
It's both awesome and sad to know how big of a difference Goga can make playing bench minutes.
We know better now why he slipped all the way to us though. Another addition for KP's long list of questionable health players.
