But also, I don’t fault a GM for trying to do best for their team. I do fault fans who then think they’re entitled to being given lopsided beneficial deals, though, because of that.

Well, if the trend holds, Celtics posters will soon be offering Marcus Smart in trades, trying to get value out of him before he leaves them

Yeah, but Smart should hold a good amount of value, even if expiring. They’d be right to dos o.

Possibly

Marcus Smart holds a good amount of value now

Who knows what it's going to be this time next year, when he has one more year left on his contract

If he has a terrible 2021 season, that will tank his value

If he has a great 2021 season, well that's just going to encourage teams to overpay for him in 2022, so teams will know that the Celtics likely can't afford to re-sign him

Ultimately, having like $90m committed to just Tatum, Brown, and Kemba is going to hurt them

My hunch is watch something with Washington/Davis Bertans. If we look back, Washington's people/players reached out to Myles and the Pacers midseason with interest in acquiring him, and both the team and Myles brushed them off. It makes me wonder if Indy might be thought of as one of the Eastern teams referenced in this article:

Bertans is pretty great, and I'd love to see him on the Pacers

Not too sure about the defensive fit with Domas though

I still don't see a Turner trade. Have no idea what someone like Bertans would demand but could be more useful than McDermott. actually any 4 or a pick to draft one could help.

I would expect Bertans to get something in free agency this year if a 3-4 year deal at a range of 13-20 million this offseason. He’s probably one of the premiere, gettable, free agents this offseason.

We could probably find 13 without giving up a starter, but 20 is too much unless he is replacing a starter. No need to discuss that again now though.

Sent from my phone.

For me to consider a deal with Washington for Turner if we are signing and trading for Bertans I'd want Thomas Bryant and their pick as a starting point. Bertans at $13-14 million for 4 years we could add someone like Doug to make the money work.

Since free agency is after the draft, can’t include the current year pick in a S&T for logistical and legal reasons.

Like many, I think Bertans is pretty great. I'd like to see him on the team

But not at the cost of Myles. And what I'm willing to give in a S&T for him, it won't be enough for the Wizards

So it's difficult for me to see a scenario where he ends up with the Pacers

looks like free agency will be closer to the draft than previously which will put the negotiating start before the draft. deals won't be final on draft night but teams may have a better idea of the holes they need to fill.

EDIT now it looks like the draft is the 18th. the contact period starts on the 20th with signings beginning on the 22nd. so draft is still first.

Yeah you're right so they could make it a 2021 #1 with top 10 protection.

Sure. But, with last nights late agreement that Woj reported, it sounds like free agency negotiations can start about 24 hours before the draft, so if you trust the player you’re negotiating with to not back out or demand more money, you’d like include a current year pick.

So do you think sending Turner and Doug for Bertans and Bryant plus the 2020 pick is a positive for Indiana. Bertans signed at $14 million.

And just a little reminder Bertans is the other guy we sent to San Antonio for George Hill.

I've said this a lot I'm not sure if the Pacers have a good draft scouting team. There's been too many of these botched drafts going back to Scott Haskin in 1993 and even before, but the worst picks in my opinion have been TJ Leaf and Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough especially the 13th pick should have been Jrue Holiday, team needed a pg desperately with TJ Ford and Tinsley manning that spot. If they'd taken Jrue there would have been no need to make the 2011 trade that sent Bertans and
Leonard to the Spurs.

Correction Tinsley was gone by then but the other guy was Travis Diener!

Again, we sent the picks to SA and they selected at those spots. We did not select them for ourselves and then decide to trade them to SA. We also sent the draft rights to Erazem Lorbek, who never came to play in the US.

It's close enough

But Myles is the best piece in the trade, and I personally prefer to see Pacers consolidate, rather than the other way around

I still feel it's way too early to trade Myles, but if Pacers did trade him, I'd rather they package him with other assets and trade for a better player

I do like the #9 though, I feel that's the sweet spot to be drafting in this draft. There are about 8 or 9 players who all could be useful, or turn out to be busts. So drafting at #9, you just select whichever one is available when it's your turn to pick

I fully understand that we did not actually draft Bertans and Leonard but who would we have picked in 2011 if not Leonard? I can imagine that we would have taken some other guy instead of Bertans. But Leonard was a dead lock, much the way John Collins was the best player on the board when we drafted in 2017.

I have nothing against George Hill but if we'd taken Jrue there would have been no need for the trade, and I'd think we would have been smart enough to take Leonard. Who knows maybe they would have screwed to pooch and took Iman Shumpert.
