Sabonis Interview on the Athletic

The Athletic posted an interview with Sabonis. I think all their stuff is behind a paywall, but I sign up when it's a $1 a month. I figured I'd post some excerpts, but I think the main takeaway is this bit which isn't saying much:

Did you feel like it was a good time for a fresh start? Were you kind of hoping you would get dealt?

Um, I’m going to represent any team that’s on my back. That’s who I am. If I would have stayed, it would have been awesome. But now that I’m here, I’m very happy.

He bristled at the Turner question and seemed to think that was all a media creation that they both have to talk about all the time:

We loved playing with each other ... I would find him (on offense). He would help me on defense, so it was kind of a cool thing. It was more of the outside noise, and everyone asking us (if they could play together).

I was hoping for more insider info on Indy prior to the deal. There was some intrigue around that article that said the Pacers may shake things up. He talked a bit about the situation in Ukraine and how the Lithuanian players understand the USSR history in a way that isn't tangible to Americans. His Mom and Dad were out in Indy for the holidays and then stuck around through the deadline since there were so many rumors and they figured they'd be there in case he needed help picking up and going somewhere else. I like the idea of Arvydas Sabonis buying pizza and beer for some guys to help him load a UHaul. It wasn't too in depth, but a good read on a guy I hope has success. I especially want him to help the Kings stay behind us in the draft pick race.

The Athletic is great value. I subscribed years ago and have remained since. The Pacers coverage is poor though. They used to have a Pacers beat reporter and now are one of the few teams without one.

As for this interview, i agree, there wasn't that much in there. I also looked to see what kind of answers he would have about Indiana. I think Sabonis is a smart guy and very PR, he wouldn't create drama on his own.

I did watch one Kings game since the trade to see how Sabonis was doing, and on one play he missed a shot at the rim, and was waving his arms and yelling at the ref while barely putting any effort in running back on defense. That always annoyed me here.
