TJ Warren: What’s he worth

Obviously we all know by now he’s shut down for the season. He’s in his final season under contract and makes $12.9 million. But besides the 4 games he played last season (averaged 15ppg), he’s missed the last 2 seasons.

His last season healthy was the year covid hit the world and Warren had that magical stretch in the bubble.

Does he sign a one year prove it deal? Will we be interested? What would a fair value be for Warren?

He just tweeted recently and sounds like he’s interested in returning (I could be reading too much into the tweet)

Thoughts?

Reading the Draft Profile on the Ringer I was surprised to see TJ listed as a comp for several of the very highly rated prospects.

He's missed 2 years with a broken bone in his foot. He's pretty much washed up.

His contract expectations may have changed, but we don't know if his playing days are washed up.

Yeah that caught me off guard too. Murray i can see. AJ Griffin surprised me though.

It's pretty much an enigma right now. He could be washed up, or he could still be an efficient 18ppg scorer

But honestly I wouldn't want to be the one gambling on this, unless he's willing to sign a team friendly deal and agree to potentially be part of the bench

team friendly because of the injury risk, yes. part of the bench if healthy, no - unless the draft gives us a top 3 or 4 that should be starting before the season is over.

There’s so much behind the scenes that we don’t know about his relationship with the Pacers. From our media perspective available to us he and the Pacers are working together to get him healthy and back with the club next season.

Of course there’s a chance a team takes a flyer on him. That’s only happening if he’s not interested in playing for the Pacers, more interested in a bigger money grab than the Pacers will justify, or my next thought.

There’s also the possibility that the Pacers are doing him a solid and publicly saying all the positive things to not damage his comeback to the league but not with us because of what they know about his injury and future stability of his ability to play.

The positive outcome is that both sides want to be together next season. I think they’ll work out a team friendly deal where he gets a prove it 10 mil deal with incentives built in to significantly raise his salary if he plays above expectations for the entire season. This would be a make the team contract and earn your way into the starting lineup. Based on his performance they’ll then discuss a new longer term contract.

Who of us knows his real worth ? Look at Oladipo currently struggling to get back to everyday playing shape.

One thing is for certain if healthy as in prior seasons he’s a strong scoring option we could definitely use until our young team grows up.

Incentives can only be up to 15% of a contracts value. If he signs a $10m deal for one year, he can only max out his total contract at $11.5m if he hits all his incentives.

a bigger contract lightly guaranteed would protect against an early season injury. insurance could deal with an injury after the guarantee date.

Agree on the use of partial guarantees.

As for insurance, it’s possible that Warrens contract might get chosen to not be covered for league wide insurance coverage. Teams aren’t allowed to acquire their own insurance outside the league wide carrier.

I'm confident they will figure out a decent contract for both parties, I just want to repeat A LOT in terms of helping the team win.
We don't have much, so we have to cherish him, even after the last 2 years.

It helps that he is a grateful guy. How much did we pay him those last 2 seasons by the way? Not all those millions, right? 100k for 2 years showing up at work without any production? 99,99% of humans would take that deal and run  .

Warren lifted this team and Sabonis kinda ran away with his medal. Thank God we figured that out, including me :) .

It's possible he could be a productive player again but having miss so much playing time it's unlikely. Unless he is willing to take a small dollar contract for 22-23 I don't know how or why we'd want to pay him big money considering his injury history. Big money is anything more than 2 years $4 million per.

I can't see him getting less than 12. I'd do a player option after the first year and try to make the contract un-guaranteed. all contracts become guaranteed in January or February but the team can protect itself from an early injury.

but if the draft gives us a SF and Warren is getting big offers elsewhere, I wouldn't think we'd need to chase the market. watching NFL free agency, teams do get trapped into bidding against themselves.

I’ll weaken my previous stance a little and say he’ll get no less than the MLE, just simply due to the lack of teams with cap space. There are a ton of TPE’s, so if we’re willing to S&T him out, that opens up his potential spots.

I'd think if the most he's offered elsewhere is the MLE, we'd go at least just enough higher not to be insulting.

I just hope TJ is healthy enough to go hard nightly because he could be a huge scoring threat alongside Haliburton and Hield. Add Turner’s defense with some scoring and hopefully another defense minded player rounding out the starting 5.

Otherwise Pacers need to add more scoring in the off season without TJ in the plans.

No weaker than the taxpayer MLE
