Trades and Transactions?

Post#1 » by Scoot McGroot » Thu Dec 15, 2022 1:56 pm

Thought it might be cleaner to just start a general thread of small midseason moves or general trade hearsay/talk that doesn’t have heavier momentum. The “Jake Fischer” thread, if you will

Another team to keep an eye on as a [John] Collins destination is Indiana. Sources said the Pacers have told inquiring teams they’re searching for a power forward to join their rebuild that features a blooming backcourt of Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin. Indiana has also suggested to opposing front offices that the Pacers are open to contract extension conversations with Turner.

Some rival executives have painted that stance as a negotiating tactic to draw greater offers for Turner’s services. And before the center recently changed representation, there was no development of any contract conversation with Indiana, sources said. Turner, though, would certainly be amenable to returning to Indiana amid a career season.

You guys would love John Collins. As would Ty and Coach Carlisle.

Yeah, it’s hard to say. You linked that vid of his workout for Indy pre drafted, but he BOMBED that workout and interview. Like, it was apparently legendary. So bad that Indy pulled him off their draft board completely and took TJ Leaf instead. The people in charge now we’re here then, so it’s hard to know if they really would want him, or if they’d still be suspicious of the terrible predraft stuff.

He’d fit in many ways. Wouldn’t fit in others. But he’d be a pure 4, which we haven’t really had in awhile.

I started a thread on the trade forum based on the Wiretap story that we're looking for a PF. Looks like Smith has moved inside and will be the backup center ahead of Jackson.

PJ Washington seems like he could be eternally available and he’s heading into restricted free agency. Jon Isaac or Chuma Okeke? Kyle Kuzma or Rui Hachimura? Dario Saric? Robert Covington? Jalen McDaniels (heading into unrestricted free agency)? Obi Toppin or Julius Randle? Chris Boucher?

I'd prefer someone Turner's age or younger. Boucher is interesting as the Raptors like us are playing 500 ball and eventually will have to decide to rise or fall. They could certainly use Buddy to contend and they have lots of players the size we need, but would have trouble matching his salary. Would we give up on Duarte? I hope not. (trading a young player for a playoff piece is how we lost Alex English)

Boucher turns 30 next month. If he’s the target, you’d really hope that Theis gets healthy quick and can be dealt with the Cavs or Celtics pick for Boucher.

except Theis could be the missing piece to keep us in the playoffs. our youth would benefit for playing some playoff ball.

So you'd be playing Turner, Theis, and Boucher as your (hypothetical) 4/5 rotation....how would Jackson and Jalen Smith benefit from (not) playing some playoff ball?

I would hope we wouldn't pay any picks for Boucher. We can find a bench big a lot cheaper.

not what I was thinking. I was just imagining that Theis could be helpful if we didn't trade for a young big. a healthy Theis might produce more wins than a young big.

Only produces if he plays, right? And if he plays, someone else doesn’t play.

But yes. A healthy Theis might add a win or two over Jackson. But as we’ve seen the last thirty years as Pacers fans, it’s not worth it long term to sacrifice development for the young guys to play a Theis and win an extra game or two just to shoot for the play-in.

Hollinger has a new piece on theAthletic discussing several teams who are around 500 now and will eventually need to decide whether or not to tank. he has the Pacers an injury away from tanking being the better decision.

however, if Theis were the backup 5, Smith, Jackson, Brissett, and Taylor could all have the opportunity to prove they deserve minutes at the 4.

Well, they'd all have to prove that, as they'd lose out on the opportunity to play minutes at the 5 and allow another to play at the 4. Adding Theis means subtracting someone else.

I'm not so sure about John Collins

I love how Pacers used to be really good at taking on rehabilitation projects and diamonds in the rough stuck at the end of the other team's bench

But with this current new Pacers I'm not so sure

Team chemistry seems to be really good right now, and the team is young and growing. I don't think Pacers should make major changes to the roster unless necessary

It'd sure be nice to plug the hole at PF, but I don't think that John Collins is the guy that Pacers should reshuffle the roster for

Might be worth a gamble if Hawks want only a small asset for him

But at that point that might be a red flag instead

On the Atlanta board they're talking about Collins like he's approaching salary dump status. I'm guessing he could be had without giving up a lot. He's a 4 on D and a 5 on O. Myles/Hali are one of the only guys he could pair with that could resurrect him.
My feeling is that he's not the sort of unselfish locker room bright spot we'd like, but our culture could be good for him as well.
I'd def take him for spare parts or mostly $$.

Also I still Think Ben Simons would work well for us. Haven't seen him mentioned here. Has he solidified his spot over there and priced himself out of our interest again?

Unrelated, but I'm feeling some sweet schadenfreude here now that Hawks fans are complaining about how limited their head coach is

I remember having to defend Pacers' decision to fire McMillan because some people were slamming the Pacers for that

Hawks had a surge when he joined them, which led to people heralding him and mocking Pacers for unfairly blaming McMillan for their struggles at the time

Well, some Hawks posters are now venting about how their coach is the source of many of their problems

Whale whale whale, how the turn tables

From where I sit, they have another problem. Trae Young. A spoiled brat with an entitlement complex.

I get the same feeling from the Hawks that they may want to dump collins and his long term deal. They'll likely be in the tax next season if they don't and then they have to sign Murray and Okongwo after next season.

I don't know if he's the answer at PF but if they do trade for him I don't want to give them much.
