Haliburton on Woj Podcast

Nice Woj podcast with Haliburton. I hope I've linked this correctly, but no guarantees about that.

The Athletic has an article up making their all star picks: LINK

They've got Tyrese as a starter. Here's their list for the East:

Starters:
Haliburton
Mitchell
Giannis
Embiid
Durant

Reserves:
Brown
Butler
Derozan
Siakam
Tatum
Holiday
Randle

Just missing:
Adebayo
Harden (mostly for games played)
Brunson (also mentioned Trae and Kyrie)

I assumed Haliburton was a long shot for the game this year, but the Pacers keep hanging around. The guards in the east are an easier path kind of like the bigs in the east used to be. Kyrie and Mitchell are leading the fan vote so Kyrie will likely beat him out for an actual starting spot. I'm not sure how the fan vote gets weighted these days but I'd assume the fans get their way if it's not too stupid. I hadn't been paying enough attention to have a feel for how he stacked up otherwise, but seeing a list like this he certainly fits in. I assume he'd have an easier time getting coaches votes vs Trae Young. I'd assume Harden does make it though and with Kyrie and Mitchell also likely getting in, I think he competes with Jrue who I assume is another favorite among coaches. I think he's 50/50 though if you're a team in the top 6 come all-star time you probably get a bump.

I reviewed the rules.

Fan vote counts for 50% for starters. Each NBA player has a vote and that total counts for 25%, then a select media panel has the other 25%. I wonder if it's any player that played a single minute that gets a vote? This determines starters and you vote two backcourt players and three frontcourt players. That's why Tatum got bumped down in the Athletic's list.

After all votes are tallied, players will be ranked in each conference by position (guard and frontcourt) within each of the three voting groups – fan votes, player votes and media votes. Each player’s score will be calculated by averaging his weighted rank from the fan votes, the player votes and the media votes. The two guards and three frontcourt players with the best score in each conference will be named NBA All-Star Game starters. Fan voting will serve as the tiebreaker for players in a position group with the same score.

Then the reserves are picked by the 30 coaches who again get 2 backcourt and 3 frontcourt votes plus two votes for any position. Coaches only make their picks within their own conference.

I think my Haliburton musings still stand. He won't get into the starter slot and given the choices currently, it will likely be somebody that wasn't on the Athletic's list that gets in over him so then he's competing with guys like Holiday for a final backcourt position.

The Ringer also lists Haliburton as a starter on their All Star Roster: LINK

Haliburton is a less obvious pick, but equally deserving. He leads the NBA in assist rate, with a usage percentage that doesn’t even rank in the top 60—admirable in a league full of lead playmakers who dominate the ball. Haliburton’s selfless tendencies and precise outside shooting mean he can thrive in any environment, next to any type of player. Some of the passes he’s thrown—whether they’re improvisations from a sideline out-of-bounds play or quick finds going full speed in the open floor—are divine.
Haliburton is also incredibly slippery one-on-one when defenses force him to attack on an island. According to Second Spectrum, he’s the NBA’s most efficient player on direct plays among those who’ve isolated at least 150 times.
