Can someone tell me what this means?

I got this off the RealGM future draft pick page this is what it says about the Pacers 2023 2nd round picks.

2023 - 31-55 to SAC; 56-60 to SAN; Less favorable of DAL and MIA if HOU 31-32 and if BOS 1-12; more favorable of (i) HOU 33-60 and (ii) less favorable of DAL and MIA if BOS 1-12 (via MIA to DAL; via MEM swap of DAL or MIA for HOU; via BOS to IND); HOU 31-32; or least favorable of HOU 33-60, DAL and MIA (via MIA to DAL; via MEM swap of DAL or MIA for HOU); SAN 56-60

It looks like we might have a #2 from Houston, but I'm not sure looks like a mess. I also don't know where the 2nd from Houston 31-32 came from.

That is really screwy to try to make sense of, isn't it?

Almost every 2nd rounder we have coming in or going out has weird protections or rules around it. I don't get too interested in 2nds anyway. Last year, didn't we move a 1st in a deal that brought back the early 2nd rounder that became Nembhard? I think the first few picks of the round have some utility, but it rolls off fast. I do enjoy the idea of all the haggling that must go on with these.

No the pick that became Nembhard was acquired in the LeVert trade to the Cavs we got Rubio, a lottery protected #1 that didn't convey last year and that 2nd which was Houston's 2nd that I think they got as part of the Harden deal.

As I recall the deal that sent Victor Oladipo to Houston and we got LeVert we were supposed to get 2 2nd and when LeVert failed his physical with the kidney issue I thought we got a 3rd 2nd round pick. But I'm not sure, like Granger05 said all our picks are jumbled up with conditions and protections except a few several years from now.

That 2nd is tied to the Oladipo deal. Houston had already sent it to Boston, protected for 31-32.

Mavs got it in a Josh McRoberts salary dump in 2017 from Miami. They sent it to Memphis for Delon Wright in a 2019 sign and trade. It was involved in a 2020 deadline salary swap of Jordan Bell and Bruno Caboclo with Memphis/Houston. The Boston part was involved in a 3 team Enes Kanter salary dump from Boston on Portland that involved Memphis (and Memphis got the 30th pick from Boston that they drafted Desmond Bane with for eating Mario Hezonja’s salary).

It’s convoluted, but Indy gets Houston’s 2nd if it’s 31-32, and if it’s not, Indy gets the least favorable 2nd of Miami/Dallas/Houston.

That's a 2023 pick? Houston is looking good for that 31-32 spot. That would mean we'd have 3 picks between about 25 and 32. That seems like a lot of guys to integrate so unlikely to all get drafted by us.

Right now Houston has the worst record.

with three firsts, if we have a second you'd think it would be for a two way but I like last year's second round pick of Brown a lot and Queen has been a G-League star. some fan favorites are likely playing their last season here.

You are probably right. The other alternative is the team uses those 1st round picks in trades or makes moves to consolidate the number of picks.

We are likely the same as other fan bases, where we tend to form an attachment with bench players who, while maybe are not all that talented, do give it their all when they get a chance.

I guess we could start to look at guys like Goga, Theis and maybe Johnson as players likely to be gone next season. Past that, do they really want to hang on to Taylor? Maybe he is used as filler in a trade? Jackson will need to start showing some consistency, as will Brissett.

I assume some of this will boil down to who is available when we pick, and what position do they play?

Turner, Goga, Johnson, and Brissett will be free agents and Taylor is not guaranteed. I have Goga and Johnson leaving which creates two spots for draftees. I'd describe Brissett and Taylor as on the bubble.

Theis has two more years under contract. If Haliburton comes back soon, Theis could be part of a playoff push. But if we keep losing, Theis might be of more interest to a contender but he'll have to quickly demonstrate that he is healthy enough to contribute this year.

Remember, Brissett will be an unrestricted free agent, and he may not WANT to return. There's been a clear spot for a PF, and the team has instead chosen to play a SG/SF in Nesmith there instead of him.

Theis's last year is a team option, so he only has one more guaranteed year under contract.

I kept hoping he'd morph into an acceptable 3, but it never happened. I can see a mutual decision for him to move on coming. he could also be included in a trade now were we to make one.

while I think we can live with that, it probably also makes him easier to trade.
