A renegotiation in and of itself doesn’t come with a trade restriction. Because his extension is only 2 additional years, and the raise in the first year of his new deal is less than 5% (hell, it’s a 40% drop!), he can be traded immediately, as he fits within the smaller extend and trade rules.

Very interesting extension they've worked out there. If nothing else, it gives both sides some breathing room. It is almost like the Pacers said, "Here you go Myles, have a free year's salary on our dime."

So, Turner gets some extra money, and the Pacers would have needed to spend the money anyway to get to the salary floor. I guess it worked out for all involved.

So, it’s $58m exactly of new money. His salary this year will go to his max of $35.0965m (he has $2m more in unlikely bonuses to keep him from his $37.0965m actual maximum salary). Likely means that :
2022-23: $35.0965m ($17.0965m of new money added to his existing $18m salary)
2023-24: $21.0579m
2024-25: $19.8456m

Indy still looking at $40+m BEFORE the cap holds for the first round picks, this summer. Myles extending, rather than hitting free agency and having a much larger cap hold to be re signed, saved a Indy a TON of potential cap room.

I have no Idea what the matching salary would look like? 125% rule on $35 million. Then a big cut in his pay for next year. How much would that be worth in trade? It's like a $14 million expiring contract.

I expect Turner to be a pacer next season, this is a great cap management deal that just does not come along very often. They still have about $10 million in space for this season to eat a contract or take a more expensive player and send back a Theis or some combo of players.

I really don't think there will be an extension before the trade deadline. The deadline is in February and this renegotiate/extend deadline is March 1st. If he agreed to something right now then I suspect it would be something beneficial to the Pacers side since they have some wiggle room here.

They can hold out till the trade deadline to see if any trades for Turner emerge that they like, or even just trades that use their cap space NOW in order to get other assets. Once the deadline passes, then they have a window to make an offer to Turner, if he's still on the team, using their available cap to pay him more now and get a better rate later.

Even if Myles Turner just didn't want to put up with the front office anymore, I still think that the renegotiate and extend option is beneficial to him. He gets a big chunk of change right now and then gets a smaller contract going forward. He gets the same amount of money (ish...you can also factor in the bird in hand and getting to invest it now), but he doesn't end up in that weird NBA space where fans think you're overpaid and start to resent you for it. If he really hates it here, the can have a handshake agreement to find him a new home this offseason, but he's already signed and doesn't have to worry about that part. Again, being on a contract that's viewed as affordable has weird intangible fan benefits and then the Pacers still recoup some of his value in a trade.

You make some good points here the Pacers have $25-27 million in cap right now depending on who you ask. Turners max is $37.1 million, his pay check is $18 million so they can give him a $19.1 million raise leaving $6-8 million in space to acquire another player, they could add Theis to any deal and bump up the incoming salary.

My guess is they will play it cool on both sides of this negotiation right up to the trade deadline. If they give Turner the max raise of $19.1 million the first year of his extension they can then drop the salary up to 40% of the $37.1 million. This may be the issue. I like a 3 year deal starting at $30 million with 5% raises and a player option for the last year. This gives Myles a 2nd shot at UFA before he's 30 and gives him a freaking butt load of money now.

And it still leaves room to make a deal for another player.

I expected it to take more like $27-30 million going forward and thought sure Turner would want a 3rd year player option. But I called the basic structure of the deal, $19.1 million raise and 2 years. I never thought he'd take the whole 40% drop, for 2023 and 24 salary. This is a great deal for the team!


I was also the guy 3 weeks before the 2021 draft calling for Duarte and Jackson. I can't dig the post up on that one but yeah...

Wouldn’t think Myles would resign like this to get traded just anyplace? His theoretical dream destination Dallas didn’t have the assets to get him before this extension. With the way this deal increases his value the population of teams with the assets to get Myles is pretty small. All that said, seems more logical to think he wants to be here. His role here is what he has wanted and the Pacers are well positioned to make improvements to this team right now.

This is pretty cool news. You forget how many variations there are in contracts. All the options I had seen always assumed he'd sign a maximum length deal. This version sets him up again for FA when the cap is expected to balloon and also leaves him trade eligible. It's a nice middle ground. His contract number for this year makes it harder to do a simple deal with him, but in the offseason he'll have a very affordable contract. I like Turner and hope he sticks around, but if we deal him I hope we get a king's ransom.
