2023 Off-Season Cap Space Team Challenge: Spend ALL Your Cap Space

Post#1 » by NYG » Wed Apr 12, 2023 1:02 am

This is a project I'm working on for cap space teams, just because I'm interested.

Here is your off-season projected cap space...
Projected NBA Salary Cap: $134,000,000

Myler Turner $20,975,000
Buddy Hield $19,279,841
Daniel Theis $9,108,386

Bennedict Mathurin $6,916,080
Tyrese Haliburton $5,808,435
Aaron Nesmith $5,634,257
Jalen Smith $5,043,773
Chris Duarte $4,124,400

Total Salary $106,315,955
Tax Space $55,684,045
Cap Space $27,684,045
Empty Roster Spot Cap Holds $0

So here are the rules...

1. You must spend ALL of your cap space. It can be spread across 2-3 players.

2. You cannot use ANY of the cap space towards a trade.

3. The following free agent have already re-signed with their current teams:
Kristaps Porzingis
Kyle Kuzma
Kyrie Irving
Caris LeVert
Nikola Vucevic
Rui Hachimura
D'Angelo Russell
Jerami Grant
Matisse Thybulle
Fred VanVleet
Jakob Poeltl
Harrison Barnes
Khris Middleton
Jae Crowder
Brook Lopez
Jordan Clarkson
Josh Hart
Dillon Brooks
Grant Williams
Cam Johnson
PJ Washington
Gabe Vincent

4. The following free agent signings have happened:

5. Here is a list of the best remaining free agents:

Point Guard

Reggie Jackson
Cory Joseph
Patrick Beverley
George Hill
Ty Jerome
Dennis Schroder
Jevon Carter
Dennis Smith Jr.

So that's $27,684,045 to spend. You can overpay a vet on a one year deal if you choose, things like that.

I think you may have jumped the gun on those players. Plus, any player who may have signed is not really a free agent, now is he?

I think they just meant in this game/exercise.

Otherwise, I’m not spending the money? Jalen McDaniels is the only possible want and we’re already tapped out on roster spots before even adding him. I can’t bring myself to overpay anyone to use up the cap space. Let’s say Jalen for $10m, and bank the rest?

AH. Re-reading the OP I think you are right. You may all now refer to me as "That really dense guy".

I could see Pacers having interest in Jalen McDaniels. Beyond that there is no one available who fits a need. Is this breaking the rules? Pacers trade Daniel Theis for Gordon Hayward. Don’t know if the salaries match up exactly but, basic premise would suck up our cap space. The idea that Hayward would like to return to Indy has been out there, would be a feel good story. He would make us better.

I also like both McDaniels. Hill should be resigned. I expect one from Theis, Jackson, and Smith to be traded to create a roster spot particularly if we can deal away a draft pick.
