Holy crap! An average of about $47M per year? How will he feed his family?

I still don't understand how we got to the point of salaries this high. It just baffles me.

If salaries were lower, wouldn't you be baffled by the profits of the owners? We got salaries this high because the broadcast revenues have soared. entertainers who put butts in seats (literally or virtually) get paid.

Ha! Yes, I likely would be.

See, that is the other part I've been thinking will fall apart. The Regional Sports Network model doesn't seem to be doing well, in particular Bally, but also some others. Cable subscription numbers are way down, and more of the "live TV" streaming services have either dropped RSNs or put them on increasingly more expensive tiers that fewer people will subscribe to. I know some of the other streaming services have bid for slices of the pie, but not for large slices. In particular, I don't see any of them trying to replicate the number of games for an individual team (such as the Pacers) covered by the RSNs they are replacing. I have to wonder about the sustainability of it.

Good to hear.

Can I get a mea culpa from basketballwacko please? As I recall you hated the Siakam deal since he wouldn't really improve the team that much and you were certain he would then leave in free agency. I said that if that happened I'd gladly admit it was in fact a bad trade.

But since we made the Eastern Conference Finals and he immediately re-signed, how about admitting you were wrong?

The one thing I can appreciate about basketballwacko is he makes me look like a "sunshiner"!

if all of the regional networks were to fail, it would be really good for the Pacers. the huge fees from mega-market local broadcasts are what allow their teams to pay luxury tax from profits.

This makes it appear that there’ll be enough to sign Obi and very little else. Maybe enough for draft picks? Nothing left for roster spots 14 and 15 ??

depends what you mean by left. there are minimum contracts and various exemptions that can be used to fill out the roster so there is money left, but if you mean left below the tax line, yes it's tight.

That has Stix on the books, but yes. That’s how the cap is set up. I would imagine pick 36 takes a main roster spot, Obi is potentially re-signed to an MLE type amount and then a vet minimum or two and we’re just under the tax. If Jalen opts out, we essentially have a touch under $20m for Obi, #36, and 1-2 other main roster spots. There’s not much to fill. And probably just the right amount to fill it?

if his agents are comfortable that there aren't going to be significantly higher offers elsewhere and we want him back (I do), an agreement in principle could be leaked soon.
