Expansion Draft

Post#1 » by TheProfessor » Sat Jan 11, 2025 6:11 pm

Hey Indiana fans, Just wanted to know if in an expansion draft what 8 players are you protecting? Remember 1 player must be unprotected from the draft and player/team options can also be protected. Thanks guys. Also what would you be willing to give up to protect one of your players from not being selected.

So I am assuming the only players of note for Indiana to give up would be Isiah Jackson and Obi Toppin?

IJax is injured and didn't reach an agreement on a long term deal so this season was going to be a show me season for him working towards a new contract. And Obi at his salary i think it'd be unreasonable for a expansion team to take him imo.

The player Indy would expose and hope he wasn't picked would be TJ McConnell. Culture setting guy, work horse.

Would you be willing to trade something in order to protect, TJ McConnell?

Small change for me. Myles Turner would be an unrestricted free agent, so he wouldn't need to be protected, and would be ineligible for selection in any expansion draft. Also ineligible for selection would be James Johnson and Thomas Bryant. I assume James Wiseman will be traded or will have his option declined for next year, so he would be an UFA and not able to be selected.

I would likely then protect TJ McConnell in his place.

Isaiah Jackson would be RFA and unprotected. If selected, Jackson would be declared an unrestricted free agent, and the team selecting would have to negotiate a brand new contract with him. Indiana would be ineligible to sign him if he was selected.
Obi Toppin would be unprotected.

I would likely make these same selections, but with McConnell in place of Turner.

And I'd protect Obi over Nesmith.

I would protect McConnell over Nesmith. 100% on everyone else.

Myles Turner is an UFA and can't be protected.

1. Tyrese Haliburton
2. Pascal Siakam
3. Andrew Nembhard

4. Bennedict Mathurin
5. Jarace Walker
6. Aaron Nesmith

7. T.J. McConnell
8. Johnny Furphy

Tier 1 (Hali, Pascal and Nemb)

I think there 3 are the pillars of our identity. The way they play together and with others breads our identity.

Tier 2 (Benn, Jarace and Nesmith)

Two of our best prospects who should be able to contribute now and in the future. I don't have the same ceiling for Benn as I did after his rookie year but he is still promising as a Top 5 guy on a title team.

Nesmith is on a team-friendly deal and gives us a switchable defensive wing who can shoot. What's not to love?

Tier 3 (T.J. and Furph)

This is sort of why we aren't a title contender, among other minor things. We don't have a strong pipeline of prospects even though I like Furphy as a long-term stay at wing in the future. T.J. is obviously a fan and franchise favorite.
