Rudy Gay (Memphis): What's the difference between me and Danny Granger? How much better am I?

Rudy's younger and more athletic than Danny, so I wont deny his upside is higher, but I have a hard time believing he's better as of right now.

Where's the "pretty obvious" difference?

The slight advantages Gay has in scoring and rebounding can be entirely contributed to his slight advantage in minutes.

He may have a better fg%, but Granger has a slightly better 3 point%, significantly better ft%, and gets to the line more, resulting in the better points per shot (1.31 vs 1.23) thus he's the more efficient scorer.

Again, I wont argue Gay has the higher ceiling. He's younger, less experienced, and more athletic, which outweighs Granger's superior work ethic and basketball IQ. But the question wasn't who will be better, the question is who is better, in the present tense.

Your post is going strictly on reputation and hype, basically, going by what Sportscenter says. That's because you're a casual fan. Rudy Gay is a better dunker, makes more Sportscenter highlight reels, thus he's better.

When Gay puts up superior numbers on a superior team, at that point I will give he the edge. At this point in time, any conclusion that Gay is the superior player is based entirely on reputation thus is a valid conclusion.

Offense: Granger, slightly
Rebounding: Even
Passing: Granger, slightly
Defense: Granger, slightly
Dunking: Gay, significantly

As an outside, I think Gay and granger are pretty even. Though I think Gay will be better in the long run.

I think offensively Gay is better. Defensively Granger is better. As players right now they're pretty even and I'm sure the Rockets are kicking themselves right now no matter how good Battier has been for their chemistry. Lots of teams are kicking themselves for passing up on Granger too.

I don't think so. Battier is a lethal 3-pointer shooter and can guard anyone in the league. Gay, probably will be better in the future, but Rockets are in win-now mode. And, don't be fooled if you think Gay would get 20ppg in their current offense and don't think Battier wouldn't get more then he's getting now by seeing the ball more in Memphis. Difference is, can Gay succeed in a role where he's not scoring that much and isn't seeing the ball as much, because Battier can be a role player and a great one.

Something that hasn't been taken into account yet is that prior to the trade, Rudy Gay has had Gasol and Mike Miller on the floor with him. He's not drawing nearly as much attention from the defense as Granger does on a night in, night out basis.

For instance, in Gay's last 5 games, without Gasol on the floor drawing double teams in the post, he's still getting 20+ ppg, but he's now doing it on .407 shooting and only .346 from the three point line.

Again, Rudy has more talent, more upside, but if I'm looking at winning a game tomorrow, I take Granger....

Unless Jessica Alba is available, that is.

I'm surprised that the discussion has evolved into a legit discussion, seeing as the initial post was a hoax...

We really dont have much else to talk about in Pacerland these days.

I will say though, Granger has really stepped it up this year. In an otherwise moribund season for the Pacers, him taking the next step towards being an All-Star is one of the few things we can get excited about. It kind of makes me wonder what kind of money Granger will be looking for in an extension. As recently as late January I was figuring something around 5 years and $40-45 million. Now I feel like its going to be around 5 years $50-55 million. What do you guys think?

As an outsider, I was wondering how yall saw Granger fitting in the team's plans? Do you think he'll end up as a franchise swingman or is he something more along the lines of a Richard Jefferson complementary player? Do you think management would move him for a high draft pick over the summer? Thanks.

I don't think we'll move him for a draft pick especially...I think he's proven enough that we're comfortable with his growth.

I, honestly, don't see him as a franchise player...I by no means am trying to compare him, but I see him as a Scottie Pippen-type. Would be great as a sideshow to a star player, but doesn't have the personality to be the No. 1.

Jermaine healthy would give us a shot at trying that out...

What pick would be an improvement on Granger?

1, 2, or 3.

That's about the best you're going to do to improve on him, and that will take time, and isn't a sure thing.

So you can count Granger out of a trade for a draft pick. Same with Gay.

Who are you getting that's better?
