I know I'm prob being quite stupid here, but I would like to see JON pay back some of Indiana's faith in the big man and Opt out of the last two years of his contract and re sign with us for less than the $44mil!

To be honest I don't even know if this is possible, but being from Australia, quite a few players have done this sort of thing over here in Aussie rules football and have gone on to win premierships due to the club being able to pick up another couple of quality players with the savings in $$$.

I'm sure he has more than enough money to live the rest of his life in comfort and to look after at least the next two or three generations of his family.

Wishful thinking I suspect.

P.S A big High Five to Jnr, Danny and TD this year, I only saw like 2 full games and highlights this season, but those three in particular have given me somthing to cheer about!!!

If he were to opt out, I'm assuming he'd sign elsewhere. I'd rather pay him and have a huge expiring soon.

Technically, he could opt out and re-sign for less. The players union would likely have a lot of heated words for him, and in all honesty, the Pacers haven't built up enough good will with JO to cause him to do this. We've ostracized him a bit, and we've misled him (re-signing JO before firing Isiah).

Technically, it could happen, but I can't remember anything like this happening, and in all likelihood, it never will.


The closest you could consider would be if he wanted a very long-term deal, and opted out of the final two years and $44 million to sign a 5-6 year deal for $14 million or so per year. He might trade future security for immediate money.

I think the NBA should start paying based on games won. Can you imagine what a motivation that would be? Each team that won would get the pot for that day, and then every player gets a percentage. Too bad this could never work, and is also a little too capitalist. I mean, it would mean that the Heat would be all better off as janitors than as an NBA team. They kinda are halfway there.

lol thats a good idea actually. Look at Ben Wallace: he started off **** in Orlando, came to the Pistons and played amazing, and then signed a ridiculous deal with the Bulls and now sucks

It could happen, but it won't. JO is not going turn down 44 million because that's too much money to pass on.

Take a pay cut... yes. Trade him and get him off our books!

But we couldn't deal him until after July 1st either way. We can't move him until he decides on his early termination option by, what I would assume would be, June 30th at the latest.

I didnt read into his post as saying we would use his expiring contract in a trade, I thought he meant just a massive chunk of cap room. My bad. In that case, yeah, it would be pretty worthless as far as dealing it if he exercised the ETO.

That would be a horrible move because imagine all the trade demands from players on losing teams.. It would be total chaos.

SHOULD is different than WOULD BE BETTER IF. I understand the impracticality of such a change. Maybe, there should be something in contracts that have like a $500-$2000 (based on base salary) bonus for a win, if only the NBA allowed that kind of stuff. I know that it would create outrages, but it would be a detriment to tanking and lazy playing if everyone got on board. That said, I know that nobody's going to go on board.

I definitely like the NFL's system of guaranteed money up front, then the rest basically being incentive-laden. It really saves a lot of teams from having to worry about players slacking off after the huge payday, which happens annually in the Immalgamation.

Would it result in more complaining from players about deals? Yes. Would stars holdout like in the NFL? Yes. But we've seen what happens... NFL Stars complain and complain, threaten to sit out, have Drew Rosenhaus go on NFL Live and plead their case, then eventually end up coming back, playing the season, and signing a new deal.

I hate fully-guaranteed contracts in the NBA and MLB, but MLB is a completely different monster altogether. My main point: Adopt the NFL's system, and re-establish that it's a privilege to play pro sports, not a right, for some of these prima donnas.
