This is a massive list of available players, with the only excpetion maybe, and I stress the word MAYBE, the restricted players (R).

The thing I'm beginning to notice is how a lot of teams are really willing to part with players and picks now in a mass effort to acquire these players and their Bird rights come 2010.

Big name FA's so very rarely sign somewhere else in basketball. Everyone is getting so excited over what will probably turn out to be nothing.

You arent taking into account just how many of those guys listed will signs extensions before they ever hit free agency.

Yeah, but will they sign that said extension with their current ball club or with a different ball club.

You can't sign an extension with a different ball club. If you're talking about players being traded and then signing extensions with their new teams, that's kind of counterproductive assuming everyone wants to get under for the 2010 free agent class. You have to take on pretty much the same salary you give out, and these deals expire exactly when the teams want to get under. You also have to look at 2 more years of age, when a lot of these players will be reduced to role playing.

Well, seeing as how you cant extend a contract with a team that you arent under contract with, I'd say most of them will probably stay with their current club. Of course some of them are liable to be traded, but you're right, its still a loaded class of free agents. We arent likely to be players for any of the big names (Indiana isnt exactly a free agents' paradise), but I wouldnt mind having some cap space to play around with that summer.

Well if Brad Miller is true to his word, he'll sign with us that summer for the minimum or near the minimum.

I like Brad's game, too, but truth is he's overpaid right now and centers age a little more quickly. The veterans minimum for him will still be $2-3 million if I remember correctly, and I'd say that's about where his value will be.

Yeah and the other thing I happen to notice on that list is where Jermaine O'Neal ranks in terms of PF/C available.

Right behind Bosh and Stoutamire!

Though Shaq is still on the list, he'll be months past 38 and likely heading for retirement.

A lot of people say J.O. won't be nearly as tradeable because his knees, but considering where he ranks on that board and the fact he has 2 years left on his current contract, Jermaine is truly a one year risk. Succeed and you got a big who can be your post man another five years but fail and he becomes an ending contract in 12 months anyway, making his value roughly the same now as it will be then.

And I think that is exactly why the Pacers have had trouble trading him. Everyone wants to make offers as if he were nothing more than an expiring contract, which essentially eliminates any risk for them. We're not going to take all of the risk in a trade, so we need value somewhere between expiring contract and All-Star.
