It takes a "Big Three" to be Elite

For the Pacers to seriously build toward title contention, they need a big three like the other elite teams.
Lakers..Kobie, Gasol, Odom
San Antonio...Duncan, Parker, Ginobli
Celtics...Garnet, Allen, Pierce
Pistons...Hamilton, Bullups, and Rasheed

Our Big Three are Granger, Dunleavy, and O'Neal (presuming O'Neal can bounce back to his previous All Star status). All three are capable of averaging 20-pts per game for the season.

We are average at the center position, but so are a lot of teams. What we need is an exceptional point guard who can penetrate, kick out, keep the ball and the team moving, and play some serious defense. If we can either trade up by packaging anyone but the big three for a point guard, or just get plain lucky by grabbing a diamond in the rough point guard at #11, I think we have the potential to compete at the elite level. Of course we've got to come up with the defensive scheme better than what we had last season to win the close games!!!!!

Our Big Three isn't enough. I think we should deal JO and try to find a new 3rd.

Oh stop winning comes in all different shapes and sizes. Big Threes, Big Twos, Fab Fives, whatever. The Pistons won a title and have made six straight ECFs with a well balanced team and a productive bench. Jordan and Pippen were the only stars on the Bulls title teams of the 90s (sorry, Rodman doesnt qualify). The Lakers are a Big Four next year when Bynum is back. We dont need a "Big Three". We need a combination of players (however many it may be) who play well together and have a will to win.

I think having 3 all-star caliber players certainly helps, but it's not the only recipe for winning. Our Big 3 is far from a legit Big 3 too. Granger is a budding star, JO looks like a floundering star, and Dunleavy will likely never be a star (not saying he's not a good player, just not a star). We just need to accumulate as much talent as possible and build a core. Maybe we'll have a Big 2, Big 3, or Big 4, who knows.
