The Pacer Board Mock Draft

Post#1 » by count55 » Sun Jun 8, 2008 6:21 pm

OK, guys, here's the scoop:

Over the next two weeks, we're going to conduct a mock draft in which members of this board will act as if they were the gm's of specific teams. We're going to do the first and second round, so we'll need to move as quickly as possible. It will be important for every one to check in regularly to keep it moving.

We will start the draft tomorrow night (Monday) at 6 pm. Each team comes up in order of the draft, and the poster who is responsible for that team will have six hours from the time they are on the clock to make the pick. (This will not include the hours of midnight to 7 am, Indy time. Picks may be made then, but I won't run out the clock on someone over night.) If the time expires, then I will make that pick for the team.

This is going to be a learning experience, so there will be some judgment involved. If you see one of your picks might be at a difficult time, try to PM me or PP or mizzou or PR07 with a wish list. This is for fun, so I'll enforce the rules only enough to keep it moving and make it fair for everyone. Also, while I'd like to be done by Monday, June 23, we have a hard deadline of draft day, and sixty picks to make. I ask that you do your best not to use up your full allotted time.

In order for this to be as realistic as possible, I encourage you to research your teams needs and likes. Visit the other boards and get a feel for what they're thinking. Your judgment and decision will be final, but I would hope that it wouldn't depart wildly from what the team and fanbase are thinking.

I did a random draw of the teams, though I did switch a few to make sure that everybody had both 1st and 2nd round picks. Everybody has at least 3 picks, some have 4, and some have 5. blaha112 only has one team, but it's the Sonics, and they have a whopping 6 picks.

I am open to allowing trades to occur, but they would have to (a) be run through the trade checker and (b) be approved by one of the mods (me, PP, PR07, or mizzou). Also, though it is legal to "sell" picks, I'm going to say we can't do that here just for simplifying adminstration of this thing. I'm not going to say yes or no on this until I hear from you guys. Do you want to be allowed to trade picks?

Without further ado, here are the team assignments:

ahartleyvu- Suns (#15, #48 ); 76ers (#16)

bballpacen- Blazers (#13, #33, #36, #55); Lakers (#58 )

Sounds good count. I voted against allowing trades...this could get way too complicated and it would probably cause more problems than anything.

Well, if we're going to allow player trades, I think we should be allowed to trade picks (with reasonability, of course). However, do we want there to be trades? If the point of this is to just be a fun and interactive way to pass the dog days of summer, then yes. If we want this to be as realistic and as close to the actual draft as possible, then trades should be kept to a minimum IMO. Either one is fine, but which direction do we want to go?

I think it would make things take too long and send them pretty far off what they will actually be. Not that it wouldn't be fun, just that it's hard to get an idea of what the consensus is on who will be drafted where if we're trading picks all over the place.

One other problem is that there is no real mechanism for the non-moderator posters to communicate offline, so...

no trades

which seems to be the way the vote was starting to go anyway...(BTW...the Yes vote was me, but I was not horribly invested one way or the other...I just wanted to see results.)

Something I was thinking we could do in the offseason of the Pacer boards is that RealGM game they are doing in the main forums...it would be fun, but I'm not sure we have enough active members here.

Sorry if that was off topic, just got me thinking of it with the trades and draft.

No trades is a good move. We can swap players afterwards, correct?

I brought Tony Parker in for an interview today. He brought Eva, and let's just say I threatened to trade him if he didn't share.

*faints*

*starts dreaming of building a team*

I would love trades just because I would love listening to calls for #1

Is there any chance we could turn this into a sim league or GM game or something like that even after the draft?

I would love that, but we would need 30 active members, we don't have that. If everyone takes 2 teams it gets easy to help yourself out, and while you can put bans on that it still takes away a lot of options. If we can get 30 people I would love to do it, I'm doing it in the trade section, I have the Bobcats.

I doubt it. We're just killing time before the draft and trade season. Something like that would be difficult to administer, and based on what I know of Scoot & PP's time demands, as well as mine, I don't think we'd have the time or ability/knowledge to expand this beyond just the draft scenario.

I believe there are other realgm boards, like the trade board, that do this. I think they'd be much more proficient at running it, and it would probably much more enjoyable drawing from a broader poster base.

This begins tonight at 6pm, right?

I won't be picking for a while, but I'll be active as a Mod to help things move quickly a freely.

I have the #2 pick and class from 6-8:15 so even if #1 goes quickly I won't have my pick in until after then. I'll make it immediately when I get home, though, if it's my turn at that point.

I'm in North Carolina this week, but I should be able to hit the board in the evenings, and check in throughout the day.

PP, thanks for the assist here and on the tradition draft.
