Another O'Neal to Cavs rumor pops up

I don't know how credible this is but i just read this and figured i'd post here to share.
And Finally . . .O'Neal to Cleveland?
Where there's smoke there's fire and there's so much smoke coming out of Cleveland that the whole city must be ablaze. What's circulating now is a rumor that involves as many as five teams in an effort to get either Michael Redd or Jermaine O'Neal to Cleveland. In either deal the Cavs wind up sending out Anderson Varejao and Wally Szczerbiak. There has also been talk that Varejao could end up in Oakland with the Warriors. The Cavs know they need another premier player next to LeBron James and they're working feverishly to make that happen.

I don't exactly know who the players involved are or if there is any truth to these RUMOURS but as long as we get the Cavs 19th pick I would seriously consider making the trade.

Meh, Varejao really does not interest me. Neither does Wally. I just don't see why the Pacers would do that.

Pacers better have alot of things up their sleeves if they do this deal. Like you said, this is just horrible for the Pacers. Wally is the worst filler we could get, because we wouldn't be able to give him the time to play. I like Varejao tho but only in the right situation. If we needed a little help to move from a 4-5 team into the top 3, i could see him helping us, but he won't do much for us in our current state.

This rumor isn't even remotely clear as to the particulars. We could end up with one, both, or neither of Wally and Varejao. I can't even find enough meat here to comment on whether I think the deal is good, bad, or indifferent.

If O'Neal is being send to Cleveland, we ain't getting much of anything in return as they don't have much to offer. The part i do like is, adding Golden State in the deal. Maybe we can get their #14 pick for Varajeo? Who knows.... we'll see.

With the news coming out that J.O. looks stronger than he has in a few years, and with his contract finally winding down, we need to just keep him, unless we're given an offer we can't refuse.
If he comes back to All-Star level J.O., or even 16/9/3/3 bpg J.O., we will have traded our best player to a conference rival for their table scraps. That's not the way to build a successful team. Well, not your own successful team anyways.
#19 picks rarely produce anything worthwhile, and are used as filler in major deals, not as primary pieces.
Let's take a look at two of the major deals over the past 12 months, Kidd to Dallas and Allen to Boston.
Jason Kidd is 5 years older than J.O., just as overpaid, couldn't get a talented Nets team out of mediocrity in the crappy East, has shooting percentages that would embarrass Jamaal Tinsley, and has had more than his fair share of injuries. Yet look what he got the Nets - a very promising 23 year old point guard, expiring contracts, and multiple first-rounders.
Ray Allen is, I believe, 3 years older than J.O., has had quite a few injuries himself, couldn't lead the Sonics anywhere playing alongside a fellow All-Star (Lewis), has a bigger contract than J.O.'s (total salary), yet he fetched the #5 pick in what was considered a great draft, as well as a few decent prospects (West).
So sorry, but the Cavs table scraps and a mediocre 1st round pick just doesn't excite me very much. Not for a 6-time All-Star big man, one that plays elite level defense, even if he has been banged up the past few years.

Good post Bucky, I agree completely. We already have a Verajo type player in Foster. What exactly would his role be? Wally coming to Indiana makes absolutely no sense either. Basically we just unload JO's contract without getting many assets back, which is stupid IMO.

I don't know if many of us dissected this "rumor" closely enough. The guy states as many as 5 teams could be involved in a deal that brings Redd or O'Neal to Cleveland. The only truth or speculation from this article is that O'Neal would land in Cleveland, without any clues who'd come to Indiana. He hinted that Golden State could be one of the teams.

I agree with Bucky as well unless we are getting some serious value I say we keep JO. We can always trade him as an expiring contract next summer. Let's give this guy one more chance to be healthy, his value seems low right now so we don't have much to lose.

I could see you Indy fans doing this (Anderson Varejao and Wally Szczerbiak) if Cleveland includes some future draft pick(s). Don't allow them to steal J-Ho like LA stole Pau Gasol. Anderson Varejao provides you with some toughness inside and Wally is obviously is the expiring contract that makes the trade happen.

The only way I'd move J.O. is if you got a nice young prospect (Devin Harris for Kidd) or a good lottery pick (5th pick for Allen).

I'd rather just hold onto JO. Varejao is the most attractive piece, and he's basically a younger and bigger version of Jeff Foster.

I wouldnt ever want to trade with Clev unless they were willing to S/T Gibson, which I dont see happening. Nothing else is interesting.

Good for Cleveland, big question mark for us. This year's draft might actually be deep enough for us to get a Hibbert at 19th, but it's riskier than liking the color red in 1963.

Cavs wont give up their first to get JO, its to much of a risk for them. Wallace and Ilgauskas were fighting back spasms last season. They dont need 3 bigs who can get injured at anytime....
The most i can see them offering is expirings, or if it was a 3 team deal i could see something like this...
pacers get...
wally szczerbiak
damon jones
brandon wright
19th pick
cavs get..
oneal
14th pick
warriors get..
varejao
11th pick
pacers get 17.4m in expirings, a young big in wright with a lot of potential, and draft someone like mario chalmers at 19.. I know some of you wont want chalmers but he could be a solid pg, shoots the ball well, a very solid defender, and a smart player....
I know you guys are gonna throw a fit over this type of deal, but i just dont see jo having that much value. But to me that would be a good package for him.....

Cavs get O'Neal and move up to the 11th pick? Not happening.
I like the Toronto and Chicago deals much better than anything Cleveland can offer. I'd prefer we keep J.O. rather than give him away for table scraps. Let LeBron continue to waste away in .500ville and let him bolt for the big city in 2010.

Yeah, I have to agree, that is pretty homeristic. We're well aware that you guys have to add another guy who can score 20ppg if you want to keep LeBron in 2010. This is a deep draft, but 3-4 years from now the guy drafted with the 19th pick will most likely be playing 15mpg as a decent role player. I do have some interest in Wright, but not when we're giving up JO and the 11th to get him. The Warriors also have no incentive to make the trade as they are not Cavs fans. They move up 3 spots and pick up a hustle player for their bench and give up a nice young player. We move DOWN 8 spots to get at best a younger version of what we already have and a couple expiring deals. You move UP 5 spots and get the best player in the deal, granted there may be health issues, and you only give up 2 expirings and a guy who publicly isn't happy with you to do it. Do you understand why the Pacers and Warriors are not interested in making moves that only benefit your team?

Well trust me i'm not a homer, and i'm not trying to be a troll or anything. I just think that you guys are over valuing oneal a little from what he use to be. I would understand that a little because you guys experienced his allstar years. But i didnt make that deal because i thought he was garbage i just dont see people giving up a whole lot for him but i guess some teams are willing to take a chance. I thought 17.4m in expirings, a young talent like wright and a decent pick was fair for the guy. Considering wright would probably fit in well with that team....
I find it funny how people resort to the lebron leaving thing when they dont like a trade idea, time to grow up a little. If you didnt like it just say you dont like it, say why or whatever. I am not gonna get upset about it... I stated that i know some wouldnt like it at all. Lebron just had a few interviews in the past 2 weeks and stated in each one that he has no intentions on leaving cleveland and he wants to bring championship here. But trust me lol i know if the cavs organization doesnt show they are trying to do everything to get him some help all of that can change.
Questioned though about that ford deal, what team called it off? Because i thought it was a good deal for the pacers. Because ford would be a solid fit with granger/dunleavy, ford is not an outside threat but you dont need that on that team because you have a bunch of shooters already. He has good court vision, good athleticism, his midrange game has improved a lot over the years. And he is gonna be playing like a mad man this upcoming season since he lost his starting job, so he probably feels like he has something to prove. He could probably be a missing piece for that team...
And is the pacers management ever gonna suck it up and buy out tinsley lol, because if you end up getting augustine i think a guy like tinsley could hinder his growth. They probably feel like they have to play tinsley because what he is getting paid.

I don't think you are being a homer or troll at all. The fact is most Pacer supporters don't want to give JO up for a bag of chips and soda like the Grizzlies did with Gasol. Expiring contracts are nice, but like I said on another thread, we would want as solid young player/draft pick for JO. Two years ago JO was a 19/9/2.5 block per game guy and was healthy. If he is healthy again, like the reports say he could be a 17/8 guy, and we aren't about to just give him to a division rival.
We have Jeff Foster for the time being, so Verajo won't excite many. He is very similar to Foster, although he doesn't rebound as well. There isn't room on the roster for two bigs as offensively limited as them. Wally, Damon and Z don't figure in the plans of a rebuilding team either and Ben Wallace is public enemy number one. You guys also can not trade your first round pick. As I see it, if you want JO you would have to be willing to send Gibson our way to get the conversation started, and I don't see you willing to do that.
