Pacers may have interest in Carl Landry?

Post#1 » by xxSnEaKyPxx » Tue Jul 1, 2008 2:34 pm

Wow, I would love it if we signed him. He would be one of the last pieces to the puzzle. However I decided to never get excited about rumored FA signings again after the Chris Webber year. :-\

As a devoted Purdue fan I feel I must point out his name is Carl Landry.

Yeah, the article basically says the Pacers aren't going to be active in the Free Agent market, but then speculates that Landry might be somebody the P's would find interesting. However, I would guess the only way the Pacers would be able to do this is to interest Houston in a S&T. Perhaps the Rockets would be interested in Shawne Williams, but I doubt it.

I would expect Houston to be able to match any contract we offer, as I don't expect us to risk going over the luxury tax to sign Greg Landry.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

Well it said we wouldn't sign any big name free agents. But your right, I expect Houston to match any contract we give to Steve Landry.

I'm certainly not saying that I wouldn't love to see Ali Landry in a Pacer uniform...I mean look at this:

I'd pay to see those locker room interviews with nothing but a towel draped around the waist.

That's the kind of banger I think both the Pacers and their fans really need. :eyebrows:

Pacers need to make this move. I would try to offer Landry something so HOU won't match it. Something like 3 yr 12 MIL. Landry is young, and would provide the Pacers something we really need.

The Houston Chronicle reports.
The Rockets have asked Landry, a restricted free agent, to undergo some in-depth testing of his right knee before making him an offer. The Rockets selected 6-7, 265-pound forward Joey Dorsey out of Memphis with the 33rd overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft. Dorsey, who is expected to compete for a spot in the lineup next season, could be viewed as an insurance policy further injury or against a big outside contract offer to Landry.

I still like the idea of Daniels, Shanwe for Swift, Kristic S&T. Then sign James Jones. This kid scares me with injury issues.

I doubt the knee will be a problem. Pacers medical staff will check him out before we give this guy possibly the full MLE.

If Bird is stupid enough to give Landry the full MLE, he's all yours.

Landry getting the full MLE isn't out of question. Everyone worth a damn in the NBA gets overpaid, and on top of that HOU will probably match anything but the full MLE. While I think 3 years 12 MIL is probably what Landry should get, if the Pacers really want to add a 24 year old big man that shoots around 55-60% from inside, they are probably going to have to go full MLE. Personally, with the way everyone gets overpaid now, I don't think its that out of question.

Kyle Landry did play college basketball recently but he played for Northern Arizona. Here is a link:

Just because that's the way that the rest of the NBA has gone over the past 15 years (although, one could argue that it's starting to work it's way back down), that doesn't mean we should vastly overpay for a guy who's only played 42 games in the NBA and averaged about 17 minutes a game. That's a ridiculously small sample size to give a guy a full MLE deal for.

I mean, if we want a 6-7 PF, let's just save some money and put a 6-9 guy at PF in Shawne Williams.

Landry measured in at 6'7.75" barefoot and 6'8.5" in shoes. I've seen guys get up to 2" bump for their in-shoes height, and considering the NBA has a tendency to round up on players heights, I think it's safe to say Landry is 6'9" by NBA standards. That's perfectly acceptable for todays power forwards, especially one as athletic as Landry.

I'd give him the full MLE if it was a relatively short contract. Say, no more than 3 years, and his knee checks out fine. I think he's worth the risk, especially at a position we're so weak in.

Minor thing....but it's the writer that was suggesting that the Pacers should go after Landry....not that the Pacers WILL go after him or are even interested in acquiring him.

Would he fit?

Probably....but unless we make some other moves to clear some more salary and roster space....we will likely be up against the Luxury Tax limit next season.

In order to use the MLE, the contract has to be AT LEAST 3 years in length. No shorter.

In terms of height, I was merely posting what I had seen after a quick google and using Yahoo!'s sports pages for Shawne Williams and Carl Landry. I really didn't have any interest in going back to look at pre-draft measurements.

36.5" actually. That was just a bit above average (nothing really special) for all the PF's drafted in the 2007 draft along with Landry.
