Taking Advantage of Artest-Odom Trade

Post#1 » by IndyDave02 » Thu Jul 10, 2008 2:12 pm

There is an article suggesting that Ron Artest might be traded to LA for Odom. However, Sacremento also wants to unload Kenny Thomas and LA doesn't want him. It makes sense for us to jump into the mix to offload Tinsely.

Here is my proposed trade:

PACERS Incoming Players
Kenny Thomas
6-7 PF from New Mexico

Outgoing Players
Stephen Graham
6-6 SG from Oklahoma State
Jamaal Tinsley
6-1 PG from Iowa State

Jamaal Tinsley

Ron Artest
6-7 SF from St. John's

Outgoing Players
Lamar Odom
6-10 SF from Rhode Island

Sacramento Trade Breakdown

Outgoing Players
Ron Artest
6-7 SF from St. John's
Kenny Thomas

Here is the relevant part of the the article from the Sacremento Bee:

"With a payroll of approximately $70 million that is nearing the league's luxury tax threshold of $71.15 million, the Kings officially ended their free-agent shopping. The last potential order of business is the future of Ron Artest, the small forward who certainly could be traded before training camp.

According to a league source, the Lakers already have contacted the Kings regarding Artest and are believed to be offering forward Lamar Odom. As of Tuesday evening, the Kings had not returned the call. They are expected to insist on forward Kenny Thomas and his $18 million of remaining salary (over two seasons) being included in that potential trade. Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie declined comment on whether the Lakers had called.

"Right now, (Artest is) just a terrific player to have on your roster," Petrie said. "I don't really have any speculation one way or another (about his future). We'll see what other things – not specific to Ron – but if there's some other way we can improve the team or change the team, we'll take a look at it."

The Lakers don't want him because they're near the tax threshold, which is why they are reportedly not matching Turiaf's offer sheet. Why would they be willing to take on a player they don't need in Tinsley and still add salary just so they don't have to take a player they could use a lot more and add slightly more salary?

The Lakers would very much like Ron I believe. I don't know if they would want to pick up Tinsley to make that happen though.

Although I doubt the Kings do it...why not cut out the Lakers and go for a straight Tinsley for Kenny Thomas trade?

I think the Kings want Odom, not Tinsley. The Lakers want Artest and might find Tinsely to be better than Thomas given they will already have Gasol, Bynum, and Artest in the front court. The Pacers would take a warm body to get rid of Tinsley and Thomas is not a bad "warm body" to take.
It looks like a win all the way around.

I would certainly think a starting line up of Tinsley, Kobe, Artest, Bynum and Gasol would be fairly formidable.

The Lakers do not want Tinsley, and the kings reasoning for wanting to move Thomas would be pointless if they got Tinsley back.
