Any news on Lorbek or Stanko?

Post#1 » by IndieRuso420 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 7:46 pm

I only bring this up because I had a dream last night that Lorbek was wearing a Pacer uni w/ #7 and I remember thinking to myself in my dream "Finally, a Pacers big man who wears #7 that actually plays!" LOL in my freaking dream (I dislike JO as a Pacer even in my dreams).

I also have a few Stanko signs that I am dieing to take to Conseco.

"Give me death or Give me Stanko."

"Who cut the Stanko?" -------->

"What would Stanko do?"

Anyways, I would like to see these guys come over at some point so it doesn't seem like wasted picks. Any news would be appreciated.

At this point, I'd be surprised if either ever wears a Pacers' uniform.

With a names like Lorbek and Stanko, we are probably better off not letting ever wear our uniforms.

I know this is somewhat off topic but does anyone on here know if either Lorbek or Stanko will be competing in the Olympics?

Well, I think Stanko will be playing for the Croatian National Team so we should be seeing him in the olympics. Not sure how much he will play, but he should be there.

I really couldn't find anything on Lorbek playing in the olympics. I believe he would play for Slovenia, but I can't find Slovenia's national team roster.

2007 EuroBasket: finished 7th among 16 teams

Radoslav Nesterovic, Matjaz Smodis, Jaka Lakovic, Erazem Lorbek, Goran Dragic, Uros Slokar, Goran Jagodnik, Aleksandar Capin, Domen Lorbek, Gasper Vidmar, Sandi Cebular, Jaka Klobucar (Coach: Ales Pipan)

He was on Slovenia's EuroBasket team but not on the World Championship tournament team.

I'm not a 100% sure Lorbek will make the Slovenia National Team, but I hope he does because I'll be looking for him.

Well here's a thought. Does anybody know if either man will be competing in the olympics this summer?

Lorbek just signed a huge contract with European powerhouse CSKA Moscow. He's a really good player in Europe and the Pacers need to show real interest in him to get him to play for them.

Erazem Lorbek is not playing this summer for the Slovenian National Team.

Rasho is playing and their games start Monday in Athens in the Olympic qualifier tournament (why Rasho will not be in Indy for the press conference next week). There are 12 teams in this tournament and 3 spots left to get to the Olympics. The Slovenian Team is missing half its good players due to injury or free agents who were without a contract- so getting to the Olympics will be tough.

Lorbek signed a two-year deal with CSKA, arguably the best European club. If you decide to bring him over in two years, you will have a big man capable of playing PF/C and hitting from 3pt line.

Personally, I am not interested in having a PF/C that is taking shots from the perimeter. I'm interested in a PF/C that keeps himself in the paint to bang and rebound. We have plenty of guys that can shoot from the perimeter. A PF/C with skills inside and capable of hitting a mid range J is more up my alley.

Well, on NBA court, 3pt line is mid range J, so he is basically everything you want from a big. He averaged 13.3ppg and 5.6rpg in Euroleague, which is great for European standards, since stats here really don't matter that much. He is more than ready to play in the NBA, so I don't really understand why the Pacers didn't show a lot of interest in bringing him over.

I am not sure where you get that the 3pt line is a midrange J on the NBA court but I'll give you that one. My point is that I don't want somebody far from the basket that is supposed to be playing the PF/C position. We have plenty of guys that can take longer range shots. I admittedly am not all that familiar with Lorbek or Stanko so if one is ready to play NBA ball, maybe the Pacers will have more interest than I care to show in either of them. I am just one of those that don't believe in 7 foot players not playing in the paint. The only star in recent memory that I can think of that has had success with that is Dirk and that was not until he learned to play inside somewhat as well. I don't believe a team can win a championship without a bonafide inside player hence why I don't see the Mavericks ever winning a championship. That is a whole different debate though 8-)

Right now the Pacers have too many guaranteed contracts on the books for this season, and even attempting to bring him over probably would've been a mistake for both parties.

Give him 2 more years to polish his game, and that will likely be the time that either Indy brings him over with a guaranteed deal, or at that point Lorbek will likely never be over.

Erazem will do fine to play for CSKA for 2 years. That's real solid competition and will either prove him to be a long-term NBA talent, or he will be exposed. That's a good thing for the Pacers that we'll find that out without having to pay him to come over.

Lorbek is a very talented player. I think many dislike him because he's European. I've read many experts say Marc Gasol could be in the running for ROY but Lorbek is a better player then Gasol. He's quick, great shooter, great vision and he actually plays defense.

I don't know what the buy out clause would be to bring him here. I appears he's set and wants to stay in Europe though?

I think Lorbek just signed a 2 or 3 year deal with CSKA Moscow, one of the top teams in Europe. He's not coming over until that contract is over.

However, I think the reason many of us are not as high on him is simply because we saw him play at Michigan State for several seasons against guys like DJ White and Carl Landry, and he just wasn't that impressive then. If he really has improved tremendously, then I'd definitely bring him over and give him a look, so long as the price wasn't exorbitant.

Part of me wonders though if he's getting all the playing time and production simply because the Euro teams aren't worried about losing him, and they're trying to hide their better, younger talent.

He really improved since his days at Michigan State when he came back to Europe. And that part about his playing time and the hiding of better talents makes no sense to me. If you are good, you will play, that's the whole story. Did Joventut try to hide Ricky Rubio or Rudy Fernandez?

True, but that's the story about all the "great potential Euro's" not getting major minutes or only playing every other game.

That's specifically what many Euro fan's have come here to tell us why we should be sold on guys like Darko, Tskitishvilli, and many other guys, successes or major failures.

There are certain guys you can't hide at all, and those are the immediate impact guys. However, it seems kids that need 2 or 3 years to become amazing players are being hidden so they're not lured away from the NBA, at least, that was the story for almost a decade of Euro fascinated drafting in America.
