Successful Trade Scenario
Congratulations on a successful trade.
Due to Indiana and Cleveland being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Indiana and Cleveland had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Dont forget we have a 2mil trade exemption we can use.

I like this trade, lets hope JJ Hickson pans out and Smith becomes available.

I'd like that trade too but the Cavs are not gonna give us a expiring contract for Tinsley.

Where did we get a trade exception?

we got the trade exception because we gave up more salary than we received in the o'neal trade. not sure if we can use it as part of a larger deal or whether we can only use it straight up by itself for a single player though.

We got it in the JO trade, and yes we can use it in another trade. Its only just over 2 mill but it can help.

It's actually 2.7 million and we can combine it with a pick, or mimimum salary player (loophole), to get whatever we need.

I appreciate the effort, but I have to be honest. If it were mathematically possible, this would be a candidate for when there could possibly less than 0. As in, this deal has less than 0% chance of working.

Look at that Cleveland roster. Let's look at it position by position.

PG: Daniel Gibson, Delonte West, Damon Jones, Eric Snow

Gibson and West will likely be the PG by committee if West ends up signing. He's restricted, so don't target him. Jones is pretty worthless and has become a specialty player (long-range bomber) though not a highly effective one, but he is an expiring contract. Eric Snow is retiring, and likely can have the last year of his contract removed from the Cavaliers salary cap due to his injuries. This is huge for the Cavs as they're luxury tax payers next year, and not moving Snow as filler, but removing him from their books would save them almost $14.6 million in cash by himself. Don't include him in any deals, it just ain't happening. He's way more valuable to the Cavs than to any other team.

SG: Sasha Pavlovic, Billy Thomas

Pavlovic is a solid rotational swingman who only has this year's salary guaranteed. He's likely only included in a deal if Wally sticks around and turns it on, or if they get an answer at the SG/SF spot (where ever LeBron doesn't play). Billy Thomas is a non-guaranteed contract that will likely be cut in camp, or during the season the day before his contract could be guaranteed. Or, he turns it on and the Cavs like him and guarantee his contract. He could be used as filler in a deal.

SF: LeBron James, Wally Szczerbiak

LeBron is....well, LeBron. 'Nough said. Wally, however, hasn't quite panned out, but should be an effective spot-up shooter in a platoon at the SG/SF spots with Pavlovic and is an expiring contract. He's only likely to be moved if the Cavs get a good deal. They're not going to move him to take on crappy contracts though, as he's still semi-useful for them.

PF: Joe Smith, Anderson Varejao, JJ Hickson

Hickson is likely a year or two away from really earning rotational minutes, and Varejao is a platoon at the PF/C spots, and a very affordable one at that. He does have some bad blood with management and likely would be a solid filler for the Cavs to get a player they really like in conjunction with some of their expiring contracts. Joe Smith has had a rebirth of a career in the past 3 years and works his way into a starting spot, or 6th man role pretty quickly wherever he goes. He's likely to be the starting PF, or might back up the PF spot if the Cavs decide to start both Wallace and Ilgauskas, and at that point, he would backup the PF spot while Varejao would backup the C spot. Smith is cheap, expiring, and highly useful. He might be moved in a deal for a valuable player, but not for Tinsley.

C: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace, Lance Allred

Ilgauskas has become a Cleveland fixture, and only has 2 years on his deal. He's unlikely to be moved as he's very useful and serviceable, though getting up there in age. Wallace was gladly taken by Cleveland because, well, he's not Larry Hughes. However, he's only got 2 years on his deal, and is going to be a rotational player. He's aging, and his athleticism is leaving him. They'd probably move him in most any deal that nets them some decent player at a position of need, or if they get better contractually, or talent-wise. He's awfully expensive though. Allred is another non-guaranteed contract who is filling out the roster. He's likely filler in a deal and won't figure into the rotation unless injuries or need change things.

So, in effect, the only guys that Cleveland might trade for Tinsley are Damon Jones, Billy Thomas, Lance Allred, or Ben Wallace. Ben Wallace makes too much money, and we'd have to include filler for him. We might be able to do a Tinsley/Daniels/Baston trade for Wallace, but it'd be awkward for both teams. The other deal that works financially is Jones, Thomas, and Allred for Tinsley. However, since we'd be able to cut almost $2.3 million THIS season, and the final 2 years of Tinsley's deal, we'd have to include a good amount of incentive for Cleveland to consider this idea. A 2nd rounder wouldn't cut it, most likely. Our only hope would be that Delonte West signs elsewhere, or overseas, and Danny Ferry rushes through the PG market and does a Tinsley/2 2nd rounders for Jones/Thomas/Allred.

However, we're not going to get a Joe Smith from them. We might get a Sasha Pavlovic from them, but I doubt we want him for any reason other than his expiring contract.

I think you've made a good case for Cleveland needing Quis or Shawne more than Tins. Quis for Varejao works straight up. Shawne for Hickson is also legal. I bet we'd throw in a second to make either or both happen.

Yeah, but they're not giving up Hickson that easily, nor Varejao. They have enough expiring contracts, they just need some value to go with them in deals. Once West is re-signed, the only value they have is Hickson, Varejao, and their future picks. Daniels just isn't that valuable. Ilgauskas will get injured, and Ben Wallace probably will too. They are going to need Varejao for some reason or another.

I'd love to do a deal for Joe Smith though. I just don't see that we have anything they could use. The best we could offer would be a Daniels/Williams for Joe Smith and Damon Jones deal. However, I think Joe Smith is the best player in that deal now and for the next 2 years, while Shawne could be the most valuable player in 2-10 years, or he could end up out of the league. That deal would save Cleveland about $818 grand in salary, thus about $1.636 million in cash since they're over the luxury tax.

I believe if orlando is interested in Tinsly you might be able tp pull it off with our help and y"all being willing to give up Ike Diogu. You end up with Matt Carroll and May, we get Diogu from you and Cook /jj redick from orlando and Orlanda gets tinsley. May need some fillin Trades to make it work but everybody ends up winners.
Think about it!
