The Indiana Pacers have the option to extend the contract of forward Danny Granger this summer, but have not opened up discussions yet.

"We haven't actually started that process yet," general manager David Morway told RealGM's Andrew Perna last week. "We have until October to do that and I'm sure we will have conversations. Danny is a young player that we hope to build with, but we haven't even begun yet."

Though I hope this gets done sooner than later, I believe we are just wanting to finish up with other moves ala Tinsley. So we have a better idea where we are at financially.

I agree. I'm not going to worry about this yet, because like Morway said we have until October. We really must get it done this offseason though.

I'm not worried about it. Management realizes what Granger means to the future of our team and will pay him what he's worth. I'd say something around $11M per year.

i would like to see a front loaded contract. let him make his money now that way he can focus on basketball later. also you just never know how things will turn out in the nba. just like i bet we wish JO was a front loaded contract that way it would have been that much easier to bring some players to help him out in the later years not to mention would have been easier to trade him.

A front-loaded contract would be nice. It would also free up several million extra dollars when we finally are players in the free agent market.

i know danny likes it here likes the idea of being a franchsie player for a franchsie trying to build a good image with positive community results. which fits him. and i know hes dedicated to rebuilding this team to be a title contender and all. but at the end of the day no matter how good of guy you are or dedicated player. it does come down to getting paid. i have a hard time realizing that sometimes with players like danny i assume they will sign a contract that will benifit the team while not under paying too much. which just isnt the case. but i think he would be fine with a front loader.

That's disappointing to hear. I had been hoping they'd be close to resolution now that the market has been established. I'm not worried yet, just disappointed.

I think so, too. One thing at a time. I think we should deal with Tinsley (or even Shawne Williams) first.

11M a year. Really? I would call him a solid sidekick player but in no way should a team build around him.

$11 million is about the going rate for "solid sidekicks" right now. Luol Deng, Josh Smith, Andrew Bogut, etc, all got roughly in the same neighborhood of a contract.

October is just around the corner, especially with all the posturing that goes on between both sides in these types of negotiations.

It'll get done, either this offseason or next. He's not leaving Indy.

Well Bogut is a young big, so he's going to get paid. Atlanta is Josh Smith's team, deservingly so. Luol Deng is the closest comparison but two years ago, he was considerably better than the Granger of last year. Everyone on that Bulls team struggled.

A lot of this has already been said, but I whole-heartedly believe that something will get done prior to the deadline. I almost get the feeling that both Granger and the Pacers are so comfortable with one-another, and with the fact that a new pact will be signed, that they are in no rush.

I could even envision Danny and his agent, Mark Bartelstein, telling Morway and Bird that there's nothing to worry about because they realize they are focused on dealing Jamaal and possibilty making a few more minor moves.

I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.

Well, it's still cheaper than Richard Jefferson and Peja Stojakovic, and it's about the same as Tayshaun Prince.


There's a market set for very good, but not great, SF's in the NBA. It's about a 5 yr/$55 million or so contract. Starts at around $9 million, and maxes out in the 5th year at around $13 million.

Take it for what it's worth, but Granger has improved every year, and is a tremendous player. He may not be Josh Smith talent level, but he's a very smart teammate and makes up for it. Around $11 million a year is probably about right for a guy like Granger. He's pretty much the exact same as Luol Deng, but older and has not had a set-back season yet.

Atlanta is Joe Johnson's team.

I'm also not sure that Deng was considerably better two years ago than Granger was last year. The last few months of the season, Danny was a monster.

Same here. I believe Danny was undeniably better than Deng last season. Well yeah, Deng got injured in February and missed quite a significant number of games but.. Danny was just superb! Two years ago, Deng may have been the better one, well it's just because he entered the league a year earlier than Danny. I'm pretty optimistic about this season that Danny's gonna be better. Deng may be back to his good form again, but Danny's gonna be better.
I'm thinking, he deserves a contract like Monta's. That should be the benchmark.
There was a thread somewhere in the forum bout that.

The Pacers better extend him this Summer or face having to match a max deal from the Blazers next year.

The Blazers will have max cap room next year, have a hole at SF and have specifically mentioned Granger as a player they really like. And they have by far the wealthiest NBA owner, so money is no limitation.

I hope they haven't, or else they'd be losing several picks or large cash fines due to tampering charges.


The teams can't talk about players currently under contract elsewhere around the league, or else they face tampering charges.
