Granger Star of Indonesia

Post#1 » by greenway84 » Mon Aug 25, 2008 12:08 pm

SURABAYA – Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger had become a big part of Indonesian basketball history. Last weekend (23-24 August 2008), he became a guest star in the first-ever NBA event in Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country.

On Saturday, 23 August, Granger attended the finals of DetEksi Basketball League (DBL), Indonesia’s biggest student basketball competition. The event is being held in the brand new DBL Arena in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second biggest city.

In front of full house crowd (around 5.000 people), Granger did the tipoff for the boys final, then participated in a shooting game during halftime. He wowed the crowd with his accurate three-point shots.

On Sunday, 24 August, Granger conducted the NBA Basketball Clinic in DBL Arena. Giving fundamental basketball lessons to 50 top DBL high school players (25 boys, 25 girls).

He gave lessons about basic skills of stretching, dribbling, shooting, and defense. And he entertained the crowd (limited to 1.000) with four slam dunks.

As the first player in the first-ever NBA event in Indonesia, Granger was treated like a superstar. Giant billboards with his name and photo is put on display throughout the city of Surabaya and the province of East Java. A total of around 70 giant advertising billboards featuring Granger is put on display throughout the vast region of Indonesia.

Sorry I couldnt find the link. Thats why I posted the entire thing. Once I find the link I will edit. Actually heres the link but it's untranslated. Ill post it anyway there are some pics of Danny on it.

Just another great event by Granger. Normally this would be un done by Tinsley, Shawne, or Daniels. But not anymore.

He's really turning into not only a quality baller, but a quality human being. Love what he does for the franchise.

These things should be publicized more. It's a big deal because of the international side of this event. If he isn't featured in an "NBA Cares" segment, then the league just hates the Pacers. Also, it would help our positive image.

Blazer fan here with a question... I was on the Boston board reading a thread about Miles and an Indy fan posted a comment about hoping Miles plays so his salary will go against the Blazers and they'll have less money to throw at Granger next summer.

Isn't Indy able to sign Granger now? If so, why haven't they?

Thanks! Good luck this season.

We are able to negotiate a new contract anytime from now until next off season. As to why we haven't, i myself don't know. I can only imagine that his agent has requested the negotiations wait to test the market as to what he can get (Iguodala and Deng related).

Anothe point would be to mention the fact that we have a number of contracts coming off the books at the end of this season, meaning we would be able to re-sign him whilst still remaining under the cap.

Both points combined would probably explain why.

No offense, but it would make me feel much easier about the situation if the Blazers weren't cap friendly enough to match any offer we coud make.

Thanks Gremz. I'm not sure the Blazers will actually use their cap space next year. There really aren't that many free agents available that the team would be interested in. I suppose they could use the cap space in a trade. I guess we'll see. The Blazers have 3 large contracts coming up over the next few years (Roy, Oden & Aldridge) so I'm not sure they want to add another $10+ million per year player to the roster. I guess time will tell. Good luck to the Pacers this season. Go Jack and Rush!!!

A couple of small clarifications...We have until October 31st to sign Danny to an extension. If we don't sign him to an extension, then we will not be able to sign him to a new contract until next July. While I think it's possible that we may be able to negotiate with him throughout the year (as his rights are our property), we would not be able to come to any binding agreement with him until the Free Agency period opens. Since no deal could be consummated between Halloween and the 2009 Free Agency period opening, it is likely that Danny would wait to see what the market offers, thereby rendering any discussions in the interim moot.

To be more accurate, we would be able to match any offer that the Blazers made (not the other way around, as we would have right of first refusal) but the real danger is two-fold: first, that the Blazers would make an offer that the Pacers would be unwilling, financially, to match; second, that the negotiations would not go well, leading Danny to take the one-year qualifying offer, thus becoming an unrestricted Free Agent in the summer of 2010.

However, I think that it is far too early to read anything into the fact that the Pacers have not signed Danny. It is likely that their first priority is unloading Tinsley. It is also possible that they are pursuing other deals (Bird has said that they are not done), and that the Pacers have requested the discussions be put on hold until later this month.

I still think that it is more likely that Danny signs an extension this fall than it is that we let him test the market. While it is certainly possible that either Danny and his agent are way high in expectations or the Pacers are way low, there has been no indication of problems in the negotiations. To be more precise, there has been no activity, yet, but neither side seems to have taken issue with that fact or be worried about it.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

^^^
Thanks for the info count, always good to learn the hows and whys about situation that are a little green to me. In regards to them matching, i meant to say that it would be nice if they didn't even have the resources in cap room to use in the first place, but didn't want to come off as a jerk.
