ESPN's David Thorpe on Pacers

Post#1 » by cdash » Mon Sep 29, 2008 1:58 am

jake (san diego): and the first pick of the 2009 draft goes to?!

David Thorpe: Coin flip between Memphis and Indiana. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll have a different answer.

Ouch. Now, its entirely possible that we are all overrating the Pacers a little (I dont think so, but whatever), but can they really be worse than New York, New Jersey, and OKC? I mean, really?

This guy actually has a job as a sports writer? You would think that would require him to know a little about sports.

I think New York is going to be up there, but Indiana having the worst record is not out of the realm of possibility. Would anyone be all that surprised if TJ got hurt? If Dunleavy reverted back to what he was every year but last year? If Hibbert and/or Rush aren't as NBA ready as we all think? If we never find a real solution to the gaping hole we have at PF? If all of those things happened I don't think too many people would be really surprised, and that would pretty solidly put us among the bottomdwellers of the NBA. The Nets have Carter when all else fails. He may not be capable of leading the team but I think he's good enough to keep them out of the cellar. The Sonics I can see being right there, but this is the NBA and I can see them getting the benefit of the doubt on a lot of calls to keep them out of the cellar just so fan support in OKC doesn't completely fall through. It makes me sad to say that, but the NBA has become more of a show where the team that raises NBA revenues most with a win is going to have to really try to lose a game.

It's widely known that Thorpe's expertise is about as valuable as Rick Reilly's. This comment should mean nothing to anyone with a brain in their head.

Thorpe is the same guy who has Kevin Love ranked ahead of Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, and OJ Mayo in his top 50 Rookie rankings. He's an idiot.

Actually, I like Thorpe. I dont agree with everything he says (case in point here), but I dont think hes an idiot. His rookie rankings arent a list of who is the best long term, but who is most likely to make an immediate impact. Love has a good chance to do that.
