is tj ford a pass first pg?

Post#1 » by coy01 » Fri Nov 14, 2008 6:39 am

just a question, ford came into the league known for being a true pass first pg. after watching his first few games, do yous think he is a pass first pg who looks to set up his team first before his own offense?

Yes. He can score, and will if he needs to, but I think he looks for his teammates first.

He's more of the Chirs Paul type pass-first than the Jason Kidd pass first. He looks to pass first but will get his own if the D doesn't respect his scoring prowess.

I think this is probably closest to the truth, acknowledging that we are in no way saying he is as good as Chris Paul.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

Fortunately he is on a team looking for points.

He's pass first if that means a scoring point guard that doesn't force his shot.

He does want to create the offence with the ball in his hand. He does dribble into traffic he shouldn't.

But he isn't selfish in any respect, and certainly on a team like ours where we are at, we need someone to score, so it isn't as if we really care.

In all honesty over the games we've had so far, he's been the guy I most want the ball in his hands if the game is on the line. Over Granger. TJ can get the ball to Granger and create, but I want the ball in TJ's hands to decide.

Not exactly a pass first PG more of a playmaking PG. Creates offense off broken plays and has excellent court vision.

Great improvisor rather than a quarterback. Right now he's scoring some more because there've been options out, most notably Dunleavy.

I think hes a pass first pg who senses when his team needs him to step up and be a score first point guard, in a way I think he is both if that makes any sense :p

I think his assists go up once Dunleavy comes back. Ford is underrated.

I think he is a pass first PG if he does not need to score.
But the thing is if you see a open lane and that you can score, are you going to pass first?

When he was here in Toronto last year, I caught an interview early in the season. He mentioned that he models his game after Allen Iverson. or his mentality was like A.I's..something along those lines..and Not exactly in those words.

Is he capable of being a pass first PG? Absolutely, he has all the talent to do so. But there is a reason Jose is our PG.

The look of Chris Bosh's face on countless nights...priceless. He really did force a lot of his offense here in Toronto, especially towards the end of the season/playoffs.

I'd say TJ isn't a pass first pg. He's sort of whatever he feels is best at the time. He'll get the ball to guys if they're wide open. If nobody's getting open then he'll take the shot. Also, he tends to try and score more when the offense is struggling or other guys aren't making shots. That's really the only knock on the guy. Sometimes he tries to do too much when the team is struggling. Either he wins you the game or he cause a loss. Still great player though.

Also, him playing with Rasho helps. When the two of them were starting here in Toronto they seemed to have a good chemistry. How's Rasho doing over there by the way?

i think he's a pass-first point guard but it's usually off dribble penetration. You lucky that he's a good fit under Jim O'Brien's system. If the coach runs the right plays on the team and use his abilities properly like here, it's good.

Sometimes he can get really competitive and look for his own shot especially. Good pick-up by Indianna.

In btw, TJ Ford is definitely a better player than Calderon but Calderon's a better fit to Chris Bosh and etc. His hamstring has rendered his defence even worse and affected his shot.

He definitely is. While I hate stats with a passion, the fact that he is the only freshman in history to lead the NCAA in assists is a good indicator of his natural ability as a passer. This O'brien system (which I really like) is structured to take the initial passes away from the PGs thus he wont ever have the stats a Calderon has (whos system involves him making the first pass for a shot...almost always a jumper). He consistently beats his man which leads to great ball movement,as he beats his man looking to pass. Really if our offense ran as O'brien chalked it up, ideally the big men would average the most assists.

Assist to Turnover ratio is one of the most important stats for a PG. That's where Jose excels and TJ hasn't. Jose takes care of the ball
