Dunleavy's Rehab Could Stretch Into Training Camp

Pacers forward Mike Dunleavy, who is out for the season after playing just 18 games, could miss the start of training camp prior to the 2009-10 season.

It will all depend on whether or not he has surgery to repair a "giant bone spur" on his right patella tendon.

"A lot of it is dependent on how the surgery goes," Dunleavy said Monday. "We won't know until you get in there and all that. We'll do that and go from there. It'll be a lengthy recovery, so I'm prepared for that."

Oh, wait, that's BAD news.

He is making the worst contracts list at this rate. His effectiveness is shot for the next year, I think. Hopefully I'm proven wrong, but this is disturbing.

There goes all the trade value he earned last year.

I called that we should have traded him while his value was high.

Sadly I don't even think at this time last year his value was that high, hopefully his rehabbing goes well and he is ready for training camp next year.

Does anyone think Daniel's team option for next year is worth more of a look now?

Nope.

Picking it up would put us at around $63 million in committed salary for next year. Add in around $1.8 million for a likely lottery pick, and 2 minimum salaried players, and we're already at the lowered luxury tax for next year. That doesn't even give Jarret Jack a thought, or a full bench. Basically, we'd run with the following lineup:

Ford/Diener
Dunleavy/Daniels
Granger/Rush
Murphy
Foster/Hibbert

With Tinsley, a lottery pick and 2 minimum salaried guys on the roster as well (think Courtney Sims or Stephen Graham type players).

That's the team we'd afford with Marquis making $7 million next year. That's a huge sum with the way salaries are going now, and before you even say we think about picking up the option just to trade him, who's going to give anything for him, and we still have to add roughly $6-8 million in salaries just to pick up likely an extra 2nd round pick or two.

I still like the idea of picking up the option IF we can get something for him. I know a few teams inquired about him, a sign and trade would not surprise me in the least when it comes to Daniels.

I like "Quis" as a player but your right Scoot, 7 million is too much for the role he will be playing on this team, sadly I think this year will be the last we see of him in a Pacer uniform.

Team's inquired about him for his expiring contract, but that ship has sailed. He is no longer an expiring contract for any team this summer except for the Pacers.

If any team out there wants him, they can just wait for the Pacers to decline his option and then sign him to a smaller contract. Why would anyone pay $7M for him when they don't have to?

This should be pretty easy to recover from, I'm glad he's taking all this time, do it wrong and you become Mcdyess.

To shed long term salary... and long term salary is something that we are going to avoid like man eating scorpions...
