Diener decides to remain with Pacers

Post#1 » by greenway84 » Sat Jun 20, 2009 7:56 pm

Diener had the option to opt out of his contract, but the 6-foot-1 guard from Marquette decided to stay with the Pacers for a third year. According to HoopsHype.com, Diener is scheduled to make $1.74 million next season. Diener said: "I like playing for coach (Jim) O'Brien. He has a system that fits my style, and I'm looking forward to returning to a team that is going in the right direction."

This is great news I think. He's a great third string guy in case of injury or whatever. Not only that but I think this team thrives on Chemistry. This is a good thing for us.

Good to have him back for another season. Good player for depth but if we draft a PG, his time will be very limited. Unless Reggie was right and we are going to deal Ford or Jack.

This may seem like a very small move to outsiders, but Diener exercising his option may very well lead to that rumored trade scenario. We won't go fishing on a big man at 13 if there is a quality PG there (Jennings, Holiday, etc.). It seems like there is more of a feeling of WANTING to have Jack with the organization than Ford, so I could see TJ being shipped. Jack can play the SG position (something TJ couldn't dream of doing) as well and with us lacking depth on the wing that could be another factor that leads us to re-sign him and trade Ford.

I like Diener. He's a pretty good 3rd PG. It'll be interesting to see what happens if the Pacers indeed draft a PG.

His willingness to return here where he is the third pg and we are talking about drafting another may speak volumes about NBA economics this summer. I think there are alot of teams where Diener could be the second pg which would be a much better playing opportunity than his situation here. My guess is he and his agent fear there may be nowhere near the 1.9 mil he is scheduled to make here next year someplace else.

Deiner is a good draft night trade chip too, a team not sold on a pg in the later part of the first round could trade us for Deiner. I like the guy and hope we keep him, he's a good blogger, doesn't turn the ball over, and won us at least one game last year.
