This is normally a time for NBA head coaches to sit in the stands in golf togs, leaving the on-court work, including game coaching during summer league play, in the hands of the assistants.

Not for Jim O'Brien. Not this summer.

With three first-round picks from the last two NBA Drafts (Tyler Hansbrough in 2009 and Brandon Rush and Roy Hibbert in 2008) as well as second-rounders A.J. Price (2009) and Josh McRoberts (2007), the Pacers' 10-day summer session has taken on an unusual level of importance.

Just goes to show how serious Bird was when he said this would be our future. I like the fact that Obie is taking the time to coach these young guys.

Me too. O'Brien doesn't have to do this. I love how he is though. Through the past month of the year I am starting to become a fan of his, though I realize he will probably only be here another year or two.

Well, since two of these guys are penciled in as starters for next year, yeah I'd say their development is a big deal. Good for O'Brien to recognize this and put in some extra time.
