Indy Makes No Headway With Jack, McRoberts by Andrew Perna

The Pacers haven't made any headway in re-signing restricted free agents Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts.

Indiana president Larry Bird has made it known that he wants to retain both players.

I'll be real upset if we don't bring Jack back. I'm not too worried about Josh, he will be here.

I'm sure it's going to be a tough negotiation with Jack as he'll have some other suitors. McRoberts should be back, but nothing's a given.

The top free agents are always going to get signed first. There not gonna resign before they see what's out there, especially Jack.

Yeah, I am not surprised. I also wouldn't be too surprised if some of these teams missing out on guys try and sign a player like Jack. As long as they don't offer him tooooo much then we'll be okay, though.

I think the talking to Luther Head was progressive, but a tall tell sign that they do have a plan B should Jack sign with Atlanta.

As for McRoberts, he should be back for three reasons.

1. He saw no action as a rookie and limited action last year. So only a young team should have any interest in him. Like Atlanta did with Edwards four years ago. You don't remember him? Not at all suprised.

2. I'm thinking the one year tender the Pacers have placed on him is a Bird rights contract which means the Pacers can't trade him once he signs at least not without his permission, and he could easily wait it out for one more season, knowing he'll get his Bird rights and a more significant payday come 2010.

I gotta say, Luther Head looks a lot more like a Plan Z than a Plan B to me.

Agreed.

Lol at count55, I also agree that Head is not going to be a good pickup. I mean he could bring some good things (shooting) and stuff, but I just don't think he's the kind of player we need. I don't think he would fit well in an up-tempo system. Shannon Brown I would love to have though, great defender and hustles all the time.

Who needs Sheed, Ariza, Artest, Lee, Kidd, or Turk. When we can get Shannon Brown. WOO HOO BABY! Championship! But seriously I really would be happy if he's the player we sign this off season. One piece at a time. Patience is Birds virtue.

All I know about Brown is that he has a huge wingspan and never really lived up to his potential. Not sure why we would waste money targeting anybody for more than minimum level contract if these are the kind of players we want. I'd be in favor of bringing Fred Jones back over some of these scrubs.

Ummm, Shannon Brown is the point guard that played with the Lakers last season. I think you might be talking about Kwame Brown.

Shannon is a guy that can shoot the ball, very quick getting up and down the floor, and can finish in the lane, as well as play good perimeter defense.

Fred Jones
PPG 7.3
RPG 2.4
APG 3.6
SPG 1.0
BPG 0.2
MPG 28.8

Shannon Brown
PPG 4.2
RPG 0.9
APG 0.8
SPG 0.5
BPG 0.2
MPG 9.9

If Brown would have played the extra 20 minutes that Jones did he would have had WAY better numbers than Jones. Also he's younger, and has potential. Where as Jones has reached his. I also don't think Jones would be a future piece due to his age. Bird is wanting to build for the future not this season. Every good team has to have a deep bench. I think Shannon will provide that.

There's an insider article by Hollinger today about the free agent market. The gist of the article is that the NBA owners are spending like crazy for whatever unrestricted talent is available, but no one is making any moves for the restricted free agents.

In turn, this has to be chilling news if you're Rajon Rondo, Luis Scola, Rudy Gay, LaMarcus Aldridge, Andrea Bargnani, Ronnie Brewer or Foye, all of whom will be restricted free agents next summer if they don't sign extensions by opening day. (Brandon Roy, who is all but certain to get a maximum extension, needn't worry.) The restricted free agents in the class of '09 couldn't get a sniff of big money even in a very underwhelming free-agent market; what can they possibly expect a year from now when the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki and Amare Stoudemire could be available unrestricted?

On the other hand, the unrestricted free agents could once again make out like bandits -- perhaps providing a carrot for the likes of Lee, Millsap and Williams to take the qualifier and play for a below-market-value price this season in hopes of recouping the difference next summer.

Last year Ben Gordon left money on the table to get his unrestricted status and that paid off. I wonder if we'll see a lot of that this summer. I could see agents advising their clients that with all that cap room set aside for next season the situation could be a lot better if you shed the restricted label. Some teams are going to miss out on the big names and they'll still want to spend their money since that's what they always do.

I know who Shannon Brown is. I watched him in college. His recent 'success' is a Lakers system thing. I don't think he'd be much help to us.

Alright I was just making sure you knew, because yeah he never got a chance to live up to any kind of potential. He got like 2 minutes a game in Cleveland and Chicago. The Lakers finally gave him a chance and he came in and played well.

Well, a big reason he didn't get a chance to live up to his potential in the NBA is because he didn't live up to his potential in the NCAA.

We need Dahntay Jones, an athletic defensive minded player to back up the 2 and 3.

I agree with ahartleyvu. He would be great for us on the defensive perimeter, and can hit some shots every now and then. If he comes at a reasonable price let's do it. Or even better, get both Brown and Jones?
