Pacers focusing on Jarrett Jack now that Jones is signed

Again from Mike Wells' Twitter account, he just posted...
"Pacers plan to turn their attention to Jarrett Jack now that they've got Dahntay Jones."
Hopefully we can get Jarrett and McBob (and his beard) signed ASAP, so we can know what we're going into the season with and start focusing on winning ball games.

Yes, we need to get Jack re-signed for sure. So far this has been a great offseason, and I can't wait for the season to start.

Jack should have been the priority in my opinion.

Agreed. Jack needs to be re-signed. Not sure what's a bigger need but reaching a deal with Jones on the first day of signings was big. I bet Jack is re-signed real soon. We should still have some money left... Who else do people want signed?

If we don't sign Jack how much money would we have to sign another free agent? Could Rodney Carney be an option? Of course it would clog up everything when Dunleavy comes back but in Mike Wells article it says we've had an eye on him to. At this point I think we need a PG but I can see why we would want Carney because he is athletic.

I think the Pacers will be able to re-sign him, I have a good feeling about it. I just don't think the market is there for Jack to get an offer from another team that the Pacers wouldn't match. I think the Pacers would match, for example, an offer that started at around $4 million next year, especially since Ford did not cement his spot as the starting pg last season. (But I'm hopeful it won't take quite that much to bring Jack back.)
I really think he'll be back with the Pacers...unless Bird pulls off some trade involving pgs.

I've seen a projection that if the Pacers re-sign Jack for $3.5 million next year, McRoberts for $1 million, and A.J. Price for the minimum, our payroll would be about $67 million (counting Tinsley) with 13 guys on the roster (not counting Tinsley). So we'd still have roughly $2 million left under the luxury tax to finish filling out the roster. Since I think the Pacers will go with 14 guys + Tinsley next season, I think they would only be adding one more guy. So, there's up to $2 million to spend to get that last guy.

Good projection mizzou, but keep in mind that the Pacers usually like to have $1-$1.5 million in breathing room, just in case of catastrophe or injury and they need to fill out the roster throughout the year.

Look for Tinsley to be a thorn once more in arbitration. It's the same type of court where JO got his suspension from the brawl reduced. From what I understand they are player friendly. Look for that court to strip us of an asset in Tinsleys contract while not saving us any money on it. We could have two open roster spots.

According to Wells, the Pacers now have approximately $3.4 million of the MLE left after signing Jones. Am I right in thinking that the MLE can't be used to re-sign your own restricted free agents? If so that would leave us a decent amount of cash to bring in 1 more quality free agent (Hakim Warrick PLEASE).

I don't think we should spend more than the minimum on anybody else after securing Jack and McRoberts. With the cap situation, we are likely to be in serious financial trouble next season. It's very possible that we will have to pay the luxury tax. Luckily, it's a one year thing, because of all of our expiring contracts, but still, I think it's a dangerous situation.

Good point.
However, the luxury tax threshold is actually about $69.9 million, not $69.0 million as I mistakenly implied. So that's close to a million in breathing room right there.
(My guess is that the Pacers will sign one more guy, and do it for less than $2 million. A third-string center type? Maybe a 'tweener forward who can fill in at either the three or the four in an emergency?)

It's the salary cap and luxury tax next year that we need to worry about. Right now, we are probably over the 2010-11 luxury tax by quite a bit and we are going to be in some trouble. Our net loss might be $10 million - and we've already been losing money. This really isn't a good situation. Spending more money is the last thing we want to do.

Do the Pacers match a full MLE contract for JJack?

Probably not. We are already up against it hard. But I don't think anybody will offer Jack the full MLE.

The luxury tax is looking SO BAD for next year, that I don't think there's a damn thing that 25 of the teams around the league can do to avoid it.
Who knows? Maybe the NBA will offer up another Contract Amnesty, like they did with the so-called "Allan Houston" provision, though ironically, the Knicks didn't even use the amnesty on Allan Houston, but rather Jerome Williams.

I agree, the league may have to step in to give some relief for this situation. But there is no way a team can plan on that. When you consider that Jones' $3 million dollar salary might actually cost $7 to $8 million - that's pretty crazy. Same when you think about re-signing Jack and McRoberts - the actual cost could be up to 250% of their salaries.

would you guys match a full MLE offer from us to Jack? Just curious because were looking to use the MLE and we need a backup PG and jack fits perfectly.

Well, with league minimum roster spots, we're going to be over the luxury tax next year without even having a roster with enough people. 11 guys (the 10 we have as of right now and our 1st round pick next year) would put us at or above $63-65 million or so. We'd still need a 12th player to meet league minimum.
