Pacers Training Camp Central

Post#1 » by Dunthreevy » Sat Sep 26, 2009 7:56 pm

To save from having a bunch of random threads about news that comes out of training camp, I figure we can just post everything here. Haven't found much information about the first practice today but Mike Wells did post something on his twitter page (http://twitter.com/Wells222) just now

O'Brien on first practice: "I thought it was a very good practice, we went four hours."

Dahntay Jones will definitely help the Pacers defense. He and Granger had some good battles during team's scrimmage.

So to all of the naysayers that were yapping when we signed him about Jones' defense being overrated, chew on that.

That's good news, I like that Dahntay is being effective already. Thanks for the update.

The three guys we brought in Benson, Nichols, and Lawrence Roberts aren't bad players. It's unlikely any of them make the team, but none of these guys are scrubs. Nichols might have the best chance at making the team because we're a little thin at the 3.

Of the 3, I know of Roberts and Nichols but honestly haven't heard anything about Benson other than the fact that he writes a blog for Yahoo. Like you said, none of the 3 are likely to make the team, but Nichols definitely has the best chance. He was pretty good at Cuse. Roberts is a bruiser but we don't really need any more bodies at the 4 spot.

Bad news guys

http://my.nba.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5700042837

"...an MRI revealed what O'Brien described as a "Grade 2 strain" of a ligament behind Dunleavy's knee that likely will keep him off the court more than a month.

Asked when he expected to see Dunleavy at practice, O'Brien replied Sunday, "It won't be in October."

"It's different from the standpoint he has a grade two strain on the back of his ligament that could only show up in an MRI," O'Brien said, "and it's going to take some time for that to heal before he can get out on the basketball court."

Maybe that's the rationale why we're working out Benson, Nichols, and Roberts.
Add to it the uncertainty of Hansbrough's status.

Well I mean, sure. The guy goes hard in practice and in games....no one ever questioned his effort. It's just that he's not very effective at it, that's all. DJ practices harder than just about any other player I've seen, but don't be surprised if it leads some injuries every now and again. It's been known to happen.

Tbh, I'm kind of more excited by what he can bring to the locker room and practice sessions that what his season stats and games would be. I get the feeling he's one of those guys who can be a seriously strong team orientated guy and possesses a lot of tools that can help the young guys along.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure his on court play will be very useful for us, I just think there is a bigger overall package with him.

I recall Granger only missing one jumper during the 12-minute scrimmage Monday. He's definitely attacking the basket on a mission. He should spent a lot of time at the foul line shooting free throws this season.

A.J. Price also looked impressive. He put on a nice shooting display when he made back-to-back 3-pointers and was fouled on a 3-point attempt the next time down the court. Price's shooting touch prompted Dahntay Jones to start defending him.

via Brandon Rush
"I think we're going to be on the court a lot together," Rush said. "They're going to move Danny to the (power forward) spot, and have me play (small forward) and Dahntay play (shooting guard).

"I think that's going to work out well."

I asked Brandon that same question during the Pacers live chat on media day and he had the same thoughts then. Good to see that it seems to be working out in camp so far. I think a lineup of

Ford
D. Jones
Rush
Granger
S. Jones

could be A LOT of fun to watch for short stretches. The tempo that lineup would push could give opposing teams fits.

O'Brien says he's not sure Murphy (ankle) will play against the Bulls on Friday but he should be ready for the China trip next week.

We can't quite seem to be able to shake the injury bug.

Well done on the link to the practice highlights. Even though it was just practice, it was exciting seeing the guys play.

Earl Watson and TJ Ford played together, interesting.

Roy Hibbert must improve in offense, and the defense he was not much
