Minor Trade Proposal

The Hawks recent success seems to be due to our efficient offense (4th best FG%) and our rebounding (8th best rebounding difference), but our defense is not spectacular (18th best in opponents’ FG%). Indiana, on the other hand, is 21st in FG% and 8th in Opponents’ FG%, and the two teams seem to be good fit for a minor trade. In comparing Zaza and Foster, we see that they would be a good switch:

Zaza:
1. Scoring: Pushes the ball inside and scores timely points that kill opposing teams’ momentum. (When he is given the minutes.)
2. Rebounding: When last year’s numbers are adjusted to starter minutes (35 minutes), Zaza was on pace to get 10 rebounds a game (10.4)
3. Defense: Zaza is about as lost on defense and Jeff Foster is on offense.

Foster:
1. Scoring: Foster is about as lost on offense as Zaza is on defense
2. Rebounding: When last year’s numbers are adjusted to starter minutes (35 minutes), Foster was on pace to get about 10 rebounds a game (9.7)
3. Defense: Although, not a dazzling shot-blocker by any means, Foster is an effective one-on-one defender against opposing bigs.

Thus the two teams gain the following:

Atlanta:
1. Trading a player that doesn’t receive the needed minutes to score his points for a defensive big man that can come off the bench in a limited role and help with the 7 footers that have given Horford problems in the past.
2. Receiving near equal rebounding quality in return
3. Gaining another veteran presence

Indiana:
1. Gets an offensive talent for defensive
2. Gets a role player that can help them keep momentum
3. Gets near equal value for rebounding
4. Gets a younger player that is about to be 26 for a player that is about to be 33.
5. Gets a healthy player for one coming off an injury
6. Gets more bulk inside (275 pounds).
7. Would get a 2nd round pick to push this trade through if you want it.

EDIT: I should have also added that the Hawks would need to throw in a filler such as Morris, Collins, or Hunter to make the trade work, and that it cannot take place till December 15th, due to a trade restriction.

Indiana:
1. Loses Jeff Foster, a local hero, for a player that 90% of Hoosier-staters have never heard of

no thanks

How long is Pachulia's contract?

Foster has a contract that helps out our 2011 plan.

Pachulia is going to put a damper on those plans. 4 more years?

Icky.

I understand it from ATL's perspective, and I've certainly advocated trading Foster to a contender for a first round pick. Wouldn't have any interest in Pachulia's contract length, although I would like to add a player of his caliber.

I'd trade Foster if ATL gave us their late first in 2011. Add in a 1 or 2 year deal and were good.

No way. Even with the first rounder. We take back a much worse contract, a player that MAY help us as much as Foster, and we give up a huge hustler/fan favorite. I say Hibbert is ready to play in the next 4 years, and where does that leave Zaza and his contract?

I don't really think this trade helps us. If anything, it just hurts our cap room plan.

I said I would give them Foster for a first and a 1 or 2 yr. deal, instead of ZaZa.

I like that a little better, but I'd really have to look at what we got in return. If the pick turns out to be in the late 20's, we're probably going to get a role player at best. The chance that Foster's attitude and work ethic will rub off on the younger players is worth more than that to me.

Just playing around with it, but the only deal that really works salary-wise is Foster for Bibby and they won't do that. Couldn't happen until Dec. 15th but that wouldn't matter because they'd be out of their minds to do that. I even tried multiple players. Do they have a trade exception or something? I'm pretty sure ours expired.

Sorry, that contract on Zaza is a complete non-starter to a Foster deal, and is a no deal, unless Atlanta overpays ridiculously.

Put in Teague and it might intrigue Bird, but it'd take an overpayment like that.

I understand the concern and the respect for Foster's role on your team. Originally, I wanted to come at this from the angle of fillers, expiring contracts (including Joe Smith who has been rebounding well), and a first round pick for Foster. I just couldn't get our contract amount high enough on our end of the trade to match Foster's contract. I appreciate anyone taking a crack at it though and possibly adding in a couple of players of equivalent talent to make it work.
