McGrady leaves Rockets, is a deal pending.

Post#1 » by basketballwacko2 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 5:07 am

Should we blow it up now and go in the tank, I don't mean deliberately lose games which we'd never do but move everyone for expiring deals and go cheap, get a high draft pick. I've proposed this in the trade thread but thought I'd bring it up here. I'm not so much thinking that we get in on the 2010 free agents like LeBron or Wade although maybe we could get a 2nd tier guy, I don't know you name him.

The deal works like this we ship out most of our big contracts for a huge contract exp this year. TJ, Foster and Murphy to Houston for McGrady, Cook and Lowry and $3 million. All are expiring totals about $28 million. We send out about $25.6 million which puts us right at the tax threashold so we'd want to buy out either Cook or Diener. We save $26.6 milion next season. We would have our draft pick and get one good free agent, $8-$9 million maybe resign Lowry and Watson. We'd be down around $50 million in salary under the cap and still in good position for 2011.

Anyone think there is a chance that this could come off? Would Houston take a deal like this and would the Pacers?

Below Lebron-Wade-Bosh there's not a whole lot of dudes that could really help us for the future plans. Houston also likes Lowry.

No.

Houston is not going to have the slightest interest in Murphy or Ford or their contracts. Those players are completely contrary to the philosophy that Daryl Morey and the Rockets are implementing. They would take one look at the advanced numbers (and I'm sure they already have), and say, "No, thanks."
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

The Rockets are a team based around hard work and hustle. That's why they have had the success they have. Me.J. Ford's attitude is completely contrary to that philosophy. They won't want him.

Houston's better off just letting McGrady's contract expire off the books.

Correct.

Regardless of anything we have to offer, there's nothing we have that should convince them to move a large expiring contract. Not Dunleavy. Not Foster. Not Murphy. Not TJ Ford. Not even all 3 in some combination. Ignore the fact that we would be having to pay them to take on our contracts, instead of getting them to include young useful guys like Landry, Brooks, or Lowry.

Well if I was them I'd let him expire or see if he'd take a buyout for the rest of the season. But they wiretap keeps running stories about them wanting to trade him.

Perhaps, but more likely it's just as his expiring deal is such a hot commodity. Highest paid player in the NBA after all...

Well there's always the nuclear option.

McGrady
Battier
Landry
Lowry

for

Granger
Dunleavy
Murphy
Ford

We'd completely bottom out, clear insane amounts of salary immediately, and roll with lowry, watson, rush, battier, d.jones, landry, hansbrough, hibbert, s.jones, foster and our 2010 pick. That pick would be damn high. We'd have virtually no salary on the books in 2010. Fans would probably give up and leave, but, hey, they're not exactly there right now, and we're losing money. From a business perspective, this deal could be attractive.

Now if I was gonna be trading Granger too I'd want Brooks in the deal but the Rocks wouldn't do that because they'd be essentially trading places with us. I think the only realistic trade we could make with them for McGrady would be Foster, Murphy and Ford for McGrady and Cook. They basically give nothing they need for 3 usful players, well 2 and 1/2 since TJ blows. And I don't really believe they'd do that. The smartest thing they can do is buy McGrady out for as little as possible.

The smartest thing the Rockets could do is let McGrady sit his ass at home or on the end of their bench, and let him walk as a free agent after this season. It's already been reported that if they trade him they want back All-Star caliber talent, and no one is going to give that up for him. We have ZERO All-Star caliber talent, aside from Granger, therefore we won't be getting in on any McGrady trade. There's really no point in even discussing it since there's zero likelihood of it happening.

First of all, no trading Granger.

Second, I think the best deal for both teams is..

Indiana Trade Breakdown
Change in Team Outlook: -30.1 ppg, -15.4 rpg, and -3.7 apg.

Incoming Players

Tracy McGrady
6-8 SG / SF from Mount Zion Christian Academy (HS)
3.2 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 1.0 apg in 7.6 minutes

Outgoing Players

Troy Murphy
6-11 PF from Notre Dame
13.8 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.1 minutes

Mike Dunleavy
6-8 SF from Duke
12.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.7 apg in 23.8 minutes

Brandon Rush
6-6 SF from Kansas
7.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.0 apg in 27.4 minutes

Houston Trade Breakdown
Change in Team Outlook: +30.1 ppg, +15.4 rpg, and +3.7 apg.

Incoming Players

Troy Murphy
6-11 PF from Notre Dame
13.8 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.1 minutes

Mike Dunleavy
6-8 SF from Duke
12.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.7 apg in 23.8 minutes

Brandon Rush
6-6 SF from Kansas
7.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.0 apg in 27.4 minutes

Outgoing Players

Tracy McGrady
6-8 SG / SF from Mount Zion Christian Academy (HS)
3.2 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 1.0 apg in 7.6 minutes

We dump our players we don't want on them for the expiring and still decent McGrady, and they get rid of him and get the young Brandon Rush for their trouble.

Win Win.

I think we want Dunleavy. Especially if we're moving Rush.

At least you included Rush though. If this team went on a run, I could possibly see a McGrady/Lowry for Murphy/Ford/Rush/lotto protected 1st. But, as you can see, that might be a bit too much salary to take on for Houston.

I honestly think that about the only deals that could possibly get done for McGrady are all-star caliber talents that aren't wanted. Think Arenas, Brand, or possibly Boozer (though a Utah deal would have to be a 3 way in order to make it so that Utah takes on less salary than it gives out this year).
