A Training Minicamp Article

In the opening act of the New York Jets’ quarterback competition,Kellen Clemens jumped out to an early lead ahead of Brett Ratliff

According to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger , Clemens was “sharp” while Ratliff threw three interceptions. Both players took snaps with the first-team offense.

Meanwhile, wide receivers Brad Smith a former Missouri quarterback, and David Clowney drew praise from Jets coach Rex Ryan.

“Brad Smith is one of the scariest athletes in the league,” Ryan said. “He has to step up. This guy has all the talent in the world. …

“(Clowney) was impressive. Everybody knows about the great speed. I like his confidence. He loves to compete. He runs good routes. I’m excited about him.”

Meanwhile, quarterback Erik Ainge didn’t attend practice for personal reasons.

As expected, running back Thomas Jones didn’t attend the voluntary workout. Jones is displeased with his contract, but Ryan reportedly didn’t seem worried about his absence.

Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens had coach Rex Ryan gushing about his performance in Friday's morning practice. For those keeping score, it's Clemens three and Brett Ratliff nothing.

For the third straight practice, Clemens outplayed Ratliff in their much-anticipated minicamp showdown. It is possible that Clemens' play might have eased the Jets' concerns about uncertainty at the position heading into the draft.

"I thought Clemens looked sharp today,'' said Ryan. "He did a decent job the first day but I really looked how he took charge of that offense today. He really brought that unit out. The tempo that they had. They had a lot of spark to them. He made some good decisions. He showed poise.

"He had some pressure in his face. Now, like (safety) Jim Leonhard told me, 'Come on, Rex, one good hit. Let us rattle him a couple of times.' I said, 'I don't know, guys, he had your number today.

"Ratty (Ratliff) made some great throws. He has a talented arm. But he still made a couple of mistakes in there. I'm sure that (the competition) will be going back and forth. Clearly, Clemens had an outstanding day today.''

Seems like Clemens will be our starter this year. I think this is the first time he's really impressed in training camp in the past few years, so that's good. Even though I'm not a big fan of him, I hope he proves me and all the haters wrong this year. lol Also good to see that Rex, likes Brad Smith and David Clowney. I hope we get to see them succeed this year as well.

It's way to early to really tell anything, I'm sure they don't even have any pads on yet. However its a nice sign to see this early. However I'm not convinced that we wont make a play for Sanchez this weekend.

Gholston has also been getting great reviews thus far.

Hey, Kellen Clemens has earned a legit shot to start for the NY Jets. He has a canon for an arm. His footwork was raw but what baffles me is the fact, the Jets complained about Chad Pennington's arm strength and went out and got Mark Sanchez. What's the question about Mark Sanchez? His arm strength never mind he had problems staying healthy in college.
