If he had his hands further down the ball and tucked tighter to his body I think it would have counted. Also pretty clear that the ball got jarred loose when it hit the ground. If it hadn't moved then he might have been awarded the catch as well.

I don't think it really matters if it was almost physically impossible. It could be physically impossible for a receiver to get both feet inbounds on catches, but if he doesn't, it's not ruled a catch. I don't think there's any doubt the ground helped Thompkins field in that catch.

I like Smith's size.. he's got a nice arm... he's mobile and isn't afraid to take a hit. Could be a blessing in disguise that Sanchez needs the surgery because I don't think Ryan would've benched Sanchez. Thing is when you draft a young QB it's almost always better to just feed him to the wolves and let him sink or swim.
