Vilma Wants Out Of New York's 3-4 Scheme
26th October, 2007 - 11:37 am
Star-Ledger - While the Jets and Jonathan Vilma are still waiting to learn the extent of the injury, his long-term future with the team also could be in question. Vilma, whose contract runs through the 2008 season, has told those close to him he is unhappy in the Jets' 3-4 scheme and wants out.

If Vilma decides to play hurt this season for the 1-6 Jets, however, his trade value could diminish. He has yet to perform well in the 3-4 scheme, playing nothing like the player who was the 2004 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and a 2005 Pro Bowler. The Jets were building their defense around him before Mangini arrived in 2006 and installed the 3-4. [READ]

Im fully expecting a trade of Vilma in the offseason and its going to break my heart...

^Took the words out of my mouth. I guess he played his last down with us. Mangini's too stubborn to go back to the 4-3, where we OBVIOUSLY play A LOT better.

Whats the difference anyways- I mean what does each system do better than the other? I am not football savvy.

In the 4-3 it allowed Vilma to do what he does best, run sideline to sideline to make plays. Vilma main advantage is that he is Fast... real fast. He hits like a beast, but in the 3-4 he has to take on guards and tackles and he is not big enough to make plays. It really limits what we can do in this scheme.

Patriots
Cowboys
Chargers
Steelers

Those are teams that all use the 3-4 effectively. For the 3-4 system to be good, it all starts with the defensive line. Robertson and Ellis are not 3-4 players either. Coleman and Harris are probably the only two players on this team that can actually play in this scheme.
