MNF: Jets @ Chargers

Coming off our first lost of the season, this team seems to be in a state of flux at the moment. Bret Favre came out and stated that this was a must win game, is it? While in the NFL you want to win every game, being week 3 its not that pressing yet. However fresh off a lose to the Broncos, the Chargers are not looking for any excuses. They were robbed of the game last week, lost the first two games by three points. They are explosive when healthy, which is something we dont know if they are. However on the other side, we seem to be lacking the explosives and there is not a better time to explode then in prime time.

Things To Watch For:

Jets Front Seven
- Last week the Pats just ate us up late in the game, I mean he was bad. Sammy Morris and Lamont Jordan were dicing through us like it was nothing. This week we will face LT, though he is healthy? No one really knows for sure. However they dont seem worried because of the sensation that is Sproles. Sproles is not afraid of anything, will run through and past you.

Secondary
- Revis matched up great last week against Moss, only allowing two catches. This week he goes up against Chris Chambers whose majority of catches this year has been big plays. The Jets have yet to give up the big play this year. Also Rivers loves to run his mouth, can we play mind games with him? Rhodes is a master of this, hopefully we can get the better of him.

Revenge, Redemption?
- Everyone knows that Marty has a son by the name of Brian Schottenheimer, this will be his first game against the team that fired his father. Also there are a lot of people calling his Brian's head as well after last weeks play calling. He needs to attack with the vertical game, the Chargers have been exposed this year thus far.

Well.., there you go. I'm actually considering staying home from work to watch this (and heroes). If our coaching don't unleash Favre.., then., I don't know what to say.

Hey.., do anyone know if Coles is playing tonight?

After taking a long break from RealGM and the east coast, I have come back. I recently moved back east to NYC, and with that my fandom has been at all time high. I am wild excited for this game. It will be interesting to see what kind of pressure the OLBs can get on McNeil. That guy is just a load at LT for the Chargers. I am also interested to see how we cover Gates.

I agree with using the vertical pass more. Brett Favre is great with the long ball, and we definitely have the personnel to use it more. There were many times last week, where I was so frustrated with the lack of offensive aggression. I understood this type of playcalling when we had a weak armed, yet extremely accurate Chad Pennington; but now we should be opening it up more.

What an ugly series of plays.

I love how this kid Keller plays. I mean his blocking isn't very good, but he brings a presence at the TE spot that we haven't had in a while.

This kid Cromartie is great. Though Favre doesn't look good or comfortable in the pocket right now.

first of all, the offense needs work, but I think it will get there. cromartie had an interception in which he climbed the back of coles and no call.. but whatever..

The defensive line without Jenkins gets pummeled. that can't happen, just can't!! we lost steam with some turnovers and could not stop the chargers. Losing jenkins hurt, I hope it doesn't go past this game..

We didn't run Thomas Jones enough, what a bad game he had, after the fumble, they didn't go to him much..

Ugly , ugly loss..

we need to beat the cardinals at home, that is a must..

Lowry is a good corner, still young. We need to get justin miller back!

When we lose Jenkins for a longer amount of time this season is over. Believe it or not, he is by far our most important player. Yes, inlcuding Favre. You don't win championships or become an elite team just with your offense or a great QB, what separates the great teams from the pack is their defense and especially their defensive line. Look at the Giants last year, Pittsburgh the years before that, New England with Wilford and Seymour, San Diego in recent years with Jamal Williams in his prime, John Henderson in Jacksonville... and the list goes on and on. We have a lot of pieces in place (strong secondary, above average linebacking corps) but without Jenkins the entire defense is a waste. That's how it works in the 3-4, you need a NT or you are screwed. Pouha is a third stringer, no more no less. When Jenkins was still playing yesterday, ask LT how running between the tackles worked out. 1 or 2 yard gains at best, just like in the first two weeks against Miami and NE. We don't have the depth like other teams who are running the 3-4 for years like Dallas and can just rotate two or three NT in there. We can only hope Jenkins isn't seriously injured or, as I said, the SEASON IS OVER!

Other than that, last night's game finally puts a rest to those idiots who just wanted to unleash Favre. Yes, including Emmitt Smith and the inept ESPN crew. Steve Young said it would be foolish and yesterday proved to be just that. I don't want to hear about all that legend crap and how great Favre is, this is about the New York Jets and not about him. He better learn the playbook quickly or we won't even be able to move the ball on offense. I don't want to hear about protection and all that, yes, it's shaky early on but then you don't throw off your backfoot into triple coverage. The coaching staff has to put in some plays who are vintage Favre like the slant or quick crossing routes. But Favre also has to realize that he can't do what he wants out there without being held accountable. As bad as our defense was without Jenkins, when the game was still relatively close, Favre threw two interceptions and we tried an onside kick. Not many defenses do well when the opponent has a short field, especially not when you are still coming together like the Jets.

A few notes about the play calling yesterday. Why don't we have more than four defensive backs in the game when there is 3 and long?! Numerous times I see David Harris or Eric Barton trailing some kind of 5-11 scrub receiver who gets the first down easily. Bring in guys who can cover and who will be able to stay with a WR. Did we ever blitz?!? Ever?!? We have great blitzers like Harris and Rhodes, so unleash them. Give the offense different looks. The onside kick was stupid, there's no question about it. All you need to know is that this clown Kornheiser called it a "cool idea". Yeah very cool when your defense was just on the field for an extended period of time. Mangini is trying to do some stuff but such gimmicks isn't the way you want to change the fortune of the team around.

Individually David Barrett had a good game at safety despite some miscommunication. Revis once again was strong and Lowery was solid (even though he got beat two times in or near the endzone). You can't expect him to cover Gates one on one though. Our front seven didn't get any pressure without Jenkins and at times really looks a little slow. Another reason why we should bring more blitzes and pressure from the secondary. Revis can cover on an island and Lowery isn't too shabby either so take that risk. Better than just being killed by short routes, screens and dump offs. Thomas Jones except for his fumble run well. Our WRs are incredibly undersized which is a big problem going forward. Keller looked outstanding as did Stuckey when we opened it up. Our special teams were tremendous with Leon, a Gholston sighting and great blocking all over the place. Kicking game didn't lose the game either.

Well, nothing has happened yet, you can lose at San Diego (even though the Chargers are far from anything special right now) but now we have tons of pressure against Arizona. Going into the bye 2-2 would be good but 1-3 might be something this team, that doesn't really show great resilliance, fire or character right now, can't come back from... especially not without Jenkins...

yea, first of all I wanted to say, that I knew mangini would listen to the press over running at the goal line and overdo it with favre. Taking thomas Jones out of the game and the ball out of his hands was a mistake, I think we should have given him 20-25 touches.... We are going to have to get more out of our running game, and not just jones, but washington and maybe bring in another HB....

I would also like to see keller get more touches, the kid has speed and he is big..

As far as our defense goes, Kris Jenkins is the anchor, without him, time to pack it in.. He was playing at a high level, and if the injury is minor and won't keep him out of any games, then great, but he is the player we can least afford to lose... the way he moves that line is awesome. we have to have him on the field..

A positive I am taking from this game was how good our pass blocking was, I mean Favre could do an endzone dance then throw towards the endzone. That wa great.

Cromartie is an exciting player but not a great cornerback. Just ask Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler who torched him for 18 catches and 160+ yards...
