No long-term contract for Asomugha

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Jul 18, 2008 12:28 am

[b]The Raiders and Nnamdi Asomugha failed to work out a long-term contract before the NFL deadline for franchise-tag players Tuesday. The cornerback will be bound to a one-year deal and can't resume negotiations until the end of the season.

The Raiders placed the tag on Asomugha in February, ensuring him a one-year salary for the average of the five highest-paid cornerbacks in 2008 and prohibiting other teams from pursuing him.

Asomugha has yet to sign the tender for slightly less than $10 million. Two people familiar with the negotiations said it is likely that he won't sign before training camp begins next Wednesday and will miss at least part of camp.

Meanwhile, the Raiders signed safety Tyvon Branch to a four-year contract that includes a signing bonus of slightly more than $500,000. He was the first of Oakland's two fourth-round draft selections in April.

From everything I've seen and read, he's the sort of player you build a team around. However, it seems like he's 1 and done with the Raiders now. I can't help but wonder about a pre-draft trade of Asomugha to the Pats for the #7 pick... seems like it helps both teams (well, the Raiders in the long run)

We're stupid... we pay the headcase and franchise the steady vet who improved over 4 years in our system.

This is why my fantasy team is named Al Davis Death Watch

The story I got is that the Raiders didn't seriously pursue a long-term deal with him, not anything they thought he would consider anyways. Al Davis likes the concept of him playing for his next contract for yet another season and will deal with the fallout from that next summer. It's not like the asking price can go any higher. That's from a name you would recognize formerly with the Raiders and now working in the public eye.

I'm the Raiders end up losing my favorite player on the team (and the best player on the team) then I'll seriously be done with this team until Al Davis is gone.

Which will be about 30 years from now.
