DeAngelo Hall done?

Post#1 » by Bay_Areas_Finest » Wed Nov 5, 2008 3:24 pm

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —Apparently, heads are going to roll for the Oakland Raiders’ 2-6 start.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall is expected to be released by Oakland on Wednesday, NFL.com reported on Tuesday evening.

It would be another drastic move for the crumbling franchise, which fired coach Lane Kiffin and hired Tom Cable at the end of September.

So far, the coaching change has made little impact, with the Raiders going 1-3 since, including an embarrassing 24-0 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

If the rumors are true, Hall’s tenure with the Raiders will have been a short one. The two-time Pro Bowler was acquired from Atlanta in March and signed to a seven-year contract for $70 million.

According to the report, Oakland is planning to waive Hall in order to avoid paying the cornerback $16 million of injury-guaranteed bonuses.

If Hall is waived, any team could put in a claim for him but would then be obligated to pick up his contract. If he were to go unclaimed, Hall would be free to negotiate with any team.

In eight games, Hall has 43 tackles and a team-leading three interceptions.

Hall’s departure could be just the tip of the iceberg, as ESPN has reported on its web site that owner Al Davis has asked the front-office staff to explore the possibility of releasing several players, mainly high-priced veterans.

According to ESPN, the list consists of 12 players, but wide receiver Javon Walker - who has just 13 catches this season - was the only one named.

My friend told me about this last night and I was shocked, only because of the crazy contract we signed Hall to this offeseason. He's garbage though, and anyone could do a better job than he has doen so far. I'm all for the move, even though it shouldn't have happened in the first place, and now we're out of a handful of draft picks in the process.

I personally feel it's best for the team to move him now instead of hanging on to him. It would be nice to receive some compensation, but I don't see it happening, so the best move is for us to part ways with him. I felt it was going to be a fresh start for him and yet he's carried his cancer ways to this team. It's time for us to move forward and really get some guys that have some class.

Also on the chopping block, not sure if any of these were reported... there were more than 12 on the 'list' thats been rumored to be out there.

Javon Walker
Tommy Kelly
Gerard Warren
Ronald Curry
Michael Huff
Gibril Wilson
Kwame Harris
Cooper Carlisle
Robert Gallery
Derrick Burgess
Robert Thomas
Ashley Lelie
Justin Griffith (injury release)
Terdell Sands
John Wade
Cornell Green

I dunno if anyone else noticed this, but those are ALL of our DTs (Warren, Sands, Kelly), and our top DE (Burgess). Also on the block is our starting LT, RG, LG, RT and backup C. Essentially, the entire offensive line except Jake Grove (baffling to me, he sucks) is potentially up too.

From what I'm told, the general consensus in the office is that Al has zero idea what he's doing. I know thats not a shock to us, but think about it - the entire organization is skeptical of Al. He signed these players Kiffin didn't like, and now is cutting them after giving no new HC a chance to work with them.

On the plus side, this was definitely the right move. We have been rebuilding the wrong way for years, and to be quite frank, the next step is to remove JaMarcus. What I see in him is another Daunte Culpepper - a guy who can be good if you pair him with an elite WR, but mainly, its on the WR to make the QB good. We've committed an ungodly amount to JaMarcus though, so we have to continue on that path and get him a top flight WR soon - whatever the cost. Bernard Berrian would have been a great pickup, so would Anquan Boldin (although he lacks breakaway speed). Unfortunately, the best option might be Chad Johnson...

Raiders teammates defend ex-Falcon Hall

“I’ve never been in a situation where you cut one of the best players,” said safety Gibril Wilson, another of the team’s offseason acquisitions. “That’s strange to me. It’s almost like we’re throwing in the towel.”

The Raiders waived Hall on Wednesday, bringing a disappointing end to a short tenure in Oakland. The Raiders sent a second-round draft pick in 2008 and a fifth-rounder next season to Atlanta in March to acquire Hall, who immediately was given a seven-year contract.

Hall was supposed to form one of the top cornerback duos in the league with Nnamdi Asomugha, but struggled from the start of the season as he adjusted to the Raiders’ man-to-man defense.

Hall had shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, but was let go anyway following a 24-0 loss to the Falcons that dropped Oakland to 2-6 on the season.

“I’m obviously disappointed,” Asomugha said. “I don’t agree with what happened. I don’t agree with what’s going on. But I am just a player so I can’t speak on it. I don’t make the decisions. All I can do is play but I don’t agree with what happened at all.”

The move to cut Hall follows other changes made by coach Tom Cable since taking over from Lane Kiffin on an interim basis after four games. Michael Huff, the No. 7 overall pick in 2006, lost his starting safety job and is now a third-stringer. Ronald Curry, the team’s leading receiver the past two years, has been relegated to special teams play.

Asomugha said the recent moves have led to some players being tentative on the field, afraid that they could be next to lose their starting job or spot on the team.

“There’s been some things that have been going on, some shakeups, that I haven’t agreed with,” Asomugha said. “Like I said, I’m not allowed to speak on it because we’re just supposed to shut up and play. But you ask me if I agree with it? I don’t agree with it.”

According to a very credible source, AwesomeWahh has instructed the Raiders to not tag him this offseason and that he does not want to play here any longer. I would expect a tagging/trade in the offseason...

This sucks if true... he's our best player and quite possibly the best CB in the NFL.

You had to know when the Raiders tagged Asomugha then didn't sign him long term that this year would almost certainly be his last in Oakland. He's the sort of player that you build a team around (from all I've heard he is excellent on the field and in the locker room).

If you exclude the off-season signings, I think it was reasonable to look at this team a few weeks ago and say that it was young, chippy, and getting better. I guess it's still young...

The only question I can think to ask is: if Al isn't going anywhere (and he isn't), why are you (the fans) staying? I asked myself that question and am in the market for a new favorite team...

Just an FYI from Kamikaze --- AwesomeWahh has hired Tom Condon, renowned harsh superagent, and is expected to sit out if franchised.

We're going to lose our best player for nothing.

Why can't we just resign Nnamdi? We cut our ties with Hall (to a degree), so do we really not have enough money? Or is Al really such a piece of **** that he doesn't wanna fork out the cash for a guy that actually deserves it?

I'm instantly becoming a fan of whatever team Nnamdi goes to, haha.

Its more that AwesomeWah won't show up for camp if franchised and asked to stay. Can't blame him one bit either. Hiring Condon is essentially telling Al that this was his last chance, and he blew it.

I suspect we'll trade him on draft day for multiple day 1 picks, hopefully a couple 1st/2nd or 3 day 1 picks...

From what I hear (very reliable source who told me AwesomeWah was a goner initially), AwesomeWah is one of several Raiders who are very vocal about not wanting to be here any longer. Burgess, of course, is the #2 guy being vocal. There are some unmentionables who are being loud too (Curry, Huff).. but the one that worries me most is that my guy says Kirk Morrison is sick of everything too.

Just like every offseason, this team needs to rebuild from the ground up. Trade their #1 (we cannot afford so many top draft picks) for late day 1 picks and start building a deep team. Not just fast guys, talented guys. And for christ's sake START WITH THE OLINE. Only one player, Gallery, has performed at a starter's level. Mario Henderson is in a distant 2nd with "really sucks but we dont pay him much".
