Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
He's still playing SS, so making up excuses for him and doesnt really change the fact that hes never played well there, and is playing there this season.

I'm not making up anything. Stating facts. He played FS vs the Rams. He played SS vs the Viks and played well.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
He did? Because he shared the field with Allen, who is in no way a SS. And he was lining up on the TEs side, when they used a TE (for example, the blown coverage on Kendricks). I haven't seen Woodson take a single snap on the weak side of the secondary yet.. right now he's our starting strong safety, and I dont think it suits him well at all. Bet that's why we tried to snag Swearinger when he was waived. Still wish we traded a 7th for him..

He played one preseason game at SS and one at FS. We'll see what they do as the preseason goes on.

Seen Allen Dowling and Asante filling down in the box way more than CWoodson but they have also played a lot more. I won't be convinced on who is playing where til the opening day depth chart is listed. Only way to really know.

That's not at all true. Who played SS for us in the Rams game? The safety that lined up on the strong side for all 5 of Woody's snaps: Woodson. NFL Game Pass is free for a week, check
The only way that you could make that mistake is if you are taking PFF's positions literally.. but if you believe them, the Raiders didnt play a single SS against the Rams.
No matter who plays SS, we're going to have a below average tackler there, unless Mays goes on a tear. Asante is decent, but abysmal at coverage

Once again, I won't be convinced on who is playing where til the opening day depth chart is listed. Only way to really know. The preseason is to test out different lineups and for the COACHING STAFF to evaluate players strengths. We'll see opening day.

Reports from training camp are Woodson and Allen have been used interchangeably. Maybe this is one reason why Taylor Mays got picked up.

Just doing a quick perusal, the word at Raiders.com even says "Another benefit to bringing Allen in is his flexibility to play either strong or free safety, meaning that he and Woodson now have the option to be interchangeable assets in 2015."
And from C-Wood himself: "“We both work both positions, strong safety and free, and we mix it up for the most part. The great thing about us is that both of us are veterans in the league and we understand the communication aspect of it, so we’re constantly talking in the back end."

That's great.
Every snap Woods on has seen has been at SS so far this pre-season. But like I said, no matter what, we have a subpar tackler at SS this year. Both are obviously more suited to be FS. Allen's time at SS for the Eagles was as a disaster.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
Lol you really are new here huh?
If I'm following coaches quotes and the relentless blind optimism about every single player, I'd think we are competing for our division title this year.. Are we? I recognize this is a 6ish win team with quite a few flaws. But I hardly think pointing out that we have 2 FS types auditioning to play SS is hating, its the truth, and I'm pretty sure you said the same thing. Puts more pressure on front 7 to stop the run, not a great thing when we already struggle to generate a pass rush

C-Wood is still one of our better players, so if he is trash six wins might be a stretch!

Bill Williamson said yesterday the Raiders might need to bring a CB from outside to start.

I wasn't speaking literally. Obviously I know you don't HATE the silver and black. You post more on this thread than anyone that I've seen. Just commenting on the fact that most of the time you take the negative side of an issue when it comes to the roster in my observation. Yeah, speaking the truth should definitely be valued but as we are a team that is struggling to turn things around, I value optimism and it rubs off in the overall NFL thread. We just have different ways of going about posting when it comes to tone. Negativity doesn't help anything, whether you believe you are having an affect or not. My view anyway.

Not sure we will actually do this but it isn't great to hear. It's not something we haven't seen as a possibility ever since we didn't draft one high and didn't aggressively pursue the top free agents at the position.
I still think we should stick with the young guys. Since no one above average is gonna be available, I'm more of the mind that we build on these guys, see who sinks and who swim. Bringing in a has been or a castoff would affect whatever confidence we gave them when we said they would carry the torch at the beginning of the off-season.

He could be one of our better players.. if in the right position. At SS, he's had no track record of success, nor has Allen.
I doubt by years end we would consider him a top 10 player on the team. If so, a lot of our young talent would need to flame out (Carr, Murray, Cooper, Jackson, Hudson, Mack, MEJ, Jelly, Dan, Carrie, etc)

I'm an eternal optimist long-term, see my posts last year. Hell it's the reason we have a thread on Hayden performing badly and not one on Menelik performing greatly - I chewed out people for calling them busts before game 1 last year. But we are still in a growing year with a lot of questions and we're good enough to have it be worth it to critique our present day situation instead of only focusing on the future like we have the past few years. Present day isn't as rosy

That reply was full of contradictions but whatever, not really important. We'll continue to see things differently I think as long as your brand of optimism involves starting a treads to criticize rather than uplift. But that is okay. That's what forums are for.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
How is it contradictory? A pair of posters screamed all season, before a single game was played, about Menelik and Hayden being busts. And I ripped them all season for it. Thus, when one is failing this year, one poster creates a thread about it.. and there's crickets about Menelik looking much better on a very good looking OL.
Like I said, you're new. Saying that Sio is hurt (true whether you believed it or not), that we don't have a SS with any history of success (true), that our young CBs are getting chewed up (true) is hardly being critical as much as its not being oblivious. My optimism has to be backed up by reason, not blind faith. That's why I'm big on Carr/Cooper/Crabtree/Murray/our OL and our offense as a whole this year. I'm not really big on our passing defense or pass rush, and I think our run D is solid to above average. Is any of that out of whack?
