Raiders set to acquire Carson Palmer

The Raiders and Bengals are close to a trade that would send Carson Palmer to Oakland, according to FOX's Jay Glazer. rotoworld/Jay Glazer on Twitter

Per Glazer, the deal is expected to be completed by today's 4pm ET deadline with Cincy receiving a first-round pick in 2012 and a future conditional pick. He adds that Hue Jackson's close, personal relationship with Bengals owner Mike Brown is what got the Bengals to move off their stubborn stance. Jackson was the Bengals' wide receivers coach from 2004-06. Palmer may need a week to get his feet under him, but the 31-year-old will give an Oakland passing game that was set to go in the tank under Kyle Boller some life. Hold your Raiders wideouts.

I don't know how to feel about this, I think Palmer gives the Raiders something they haven't had in almost a decade at the QB position, but at the same time it was a steep price to pay.

It's not like we gave up a top 10-15 pick for Palmer. It was a late first round and a 2nd round pick. Not that bad. We didn't give up Andrew Luck here, people. Steep price, yes, but I want to win games this year, and Kyle Boller certainly wasn't going to do that.

I'm excited to see Palmer out there!

Carson Palmer is expected to start Sunday's game against the Chiefs, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

So much for easing a guy in. The Raiders gave up a king's ransom for Palmer and understandably want him on the field immediately. Given Palmer's high football IQ, grasping the playbook shouldn't be a major stumbling block. However, we'd expect a run-heavy approach against the Chiefs, capping Palmer's fantasy upside as a low-end QB2. Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore are at least desperation options now -- they would have been completely off the radar if Kyle Boller was the starter.

I liked the trade. I know it was a steep price to pay, but Carson Palmer has the potential to be an elite QB and is now signed on to be this franchises QB for the next few years. He won't be asked to do to much with the Raiders great running game and he can help the Raiders young WR's develop. DHB, Ford, and Moore are all young and very talented and you put a QB with the talent Palmer has and you have the makings of a potentially electric passing game. I liked the trade and I'm excited to see what Carson can do.

A closer look at Palmer's arm

There's been a perception among talent evaluators that the torque in Carson Palmer's right arm and the zip on his ball hasn't been the same since he underwent elbow surgery back in 2008.

That elbow is now rested. And those around Palmer think the layoff did the quarterback some good in that sense, hard as it may have been to spend the last 10 months away from the game.

Palmer Took $5M Pay Cut This Season

Carson Palmer restructured his contract and took a $5M pay cut this season, according to an NFLPA source.

Under his old contract, Palmer was set to make $11.5M this season. Prorated over the final 11 games, he would have made $7.44M. The Raiders now will pay him $2.5M for the remainder of this season. http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... is_season/

The wideouts are staying late with Palmer, this is something I never would have imagined a few years ago. I feel even more optimistic about the future of this team than I have in the past decade!
