Looks like Penn is rated above the likes of Jared Veldheer and Joe Staley.

Re: Mack and Penn make PFF Top 100
the interesting ones to this forum:
Shariff was widely projected to the Raiders in the 2013 draft.
I maintain, we shoulda signed him.
Our rookie is considered one of the top 40 players in the NFL after one season. Not bad.
#1-30 still aren't available yet, so I imagine Aaron Donald will be in that group, along with Odell Beckham Jr. Still, considering that PFF used the average per position and then extrapolated that to measure players across positions, Mack starting out as 39th when he wasn't being used as a LEO - his likely position next year- is just crazy.
100. Jared Veldheer, OT, Arizona Cardinals (Unranked)
A good first year in Arizona where he proved the left tackle Arizona has been searching for since PFF was a glint in anyone’s eye. As can be the case in a new team he took a while to get going but after the first six weeks of the season he’d clearly found his rhythm in the Arians offense and would only allow multiple-pressure games four times the rest of the season (and never more than two in a game). Contributed nicely in the running game to boot.
Best Performance: WK13 ARZ @ ATL, +3.5
Key Stat: Fourth-highest pass-blocking efficiency number of any tackle during the 2014 season
83. Shariff Floyd, ID, Minnesota Vikings (Unranked)
This is the kind of player the Vikings were expecting when they spent a first round pick on him in 2013. Floyd only played 587 snaps yet did enough with those snaps to earn the fifth highest overall grade of all 4-3 defensive tackles. Particularly impressive against the run, it’s worth noting that Floyd scored a positive grade rushing the passer to show himself a fully complete player.
Best Performance: Week 11, MIN @ CHI, +5.8
Key Stat: Graded positively in all bar four games.
Shariff was widely projected to the Raiders in the 2013 draft.
79. Donald Penn, LT, Oakland Raiders (Unranked)
The Bucs didn’t look too smart after ditching Penn for Anthony Collins, but the Raiders came out smiling given just how well he played. Seemingly playing with a chip on his shoulder most of the year, you rarely noticed Penn such was his shutdown nature in pass protection. Sure his run blocking didn’t wow you like others, but when you can go through a year earning the fifth-highest grade in pass protection for all left tackles what more could the Raiders ask for?
Best Performance: Week 16, BUF @ OAK, +6.3
Key Stat: Only graded negatively in pass protection twice all year.
52. Pernell McPhee, ED, Baltimore Ravens (Unranked)
Earned himself a big free agent deal as a situational menace in Baltimore. Playing just 540 snaps he still earned the second highest grade of all 3-4 outside linebackers. Imagine what he could do with more playing time? A true defensive mismatch who can and was used in a number of ways to exploit and overwhelm offenses, McPhee was fantastic in picking up a huge 64 quarterback disruptions.
Best Performance: Week 4, CAR @ BLT, +5.1
Key Stat: His 14.0 Pass Rushing Productivity score was fourth best of all edge defenders.
I maintain, we shoulda signed him.
39. Khalil Mack, ED, Oakland Raiders (Unranked)
For a while Mack was in for some criticism as the sacks didn’t flow. That one number didn’t come close to telling the story of Mack, who was a solid pass rusher and an out of this world run defender. His 54 quarterback disruptions are a number to be proud of, but it’s his work in the run game that sees him so high. Nobody made life as hard for blockers on the edge as Mack, a true rookie force.
Best Performance: Week 16, BUF @ OAK, +7.8
Key Stat: Scored the highest grade of any edge defender in run defense.

good job Reggie.
time to start grooming Penn's replacement though.

Yup. We were fortunate to have Penn drop into our laps that late into FA last offseason. Convincing him to sign a 2 year deal was huge too. Sometimes being lucky > being good
Aaron Donald was 19th, OBJ was 11th. Not bad that our guy is 39th with a bare-bones supporting cast. Now with legitimate players on the front 7 with him, Mack is poised to make as serious impact. And if our pass rush finally comes together, I think we'll see Hayden and Nate Allen have great seasons as well. Our defense is really coming along, I think we should be able to crack the top half of defenses this year, health permitting.

Re: Mack and Penn make PFF Top 100
Pernell McPhee primarily played in the 3-4. I know he that was versatile in that set playing olb and all dline positions but he was also a rotational player. 8mil a yr for 4yrs is a lot to pay for a backup and would need to learn a new def even if he had great #'s. That's the kind of gamble Reggie won't make. Better off with Edwards in that spot and seeing the progression of our young guys (Mayowa, CJ Wilson and Harris). If they crap the bed this yr then we chase a stud next yr like JPP to replace Tuck.

Re: Mack and Penn make PFF Top 100
McPhee was a 3-4 OLB but I think he would be an excellent situational pass-rusher.. he also graded out well against the run. Looks like we're tabbing Mack for that hybrid DE/OLB spot though. Based on what JDR's said and what we've seen at OTAs, Mack is going to see a lot of snaps at DE.
We need guys who can get mitts on the QB.. McPhee fits the bill. I think he'll be a + player in CHI, even though the rest of their defense is sub par. Woulda been a risk, but woulda been pretty nice. And we do switch between 4-3 and 3-4 enough that McPhee would have gotten some snaps as a 3-4 OLB here, or as our LEO.

Re: Mack and Penn make PFF Top 100
Argee we need pass rush like yesterday and McPhee can turn the corner and has a nice bull rush but he's almost a clone for Mack in our defense. Not a bad thing when you consider production but on the opposite side of Mack generally we'd want a balanced DE and a fast weakside lb that can make plays in space. Reggie and Del Rio are setting that up with Edwards and Moore/Smith. Word is Mack came into camp having gained another 10-12 lbs of lean muscle, looking to go into the season at 260-265. He is gonna kill the subpar LT's our division will be starting this yr now that Clady is laid up.

Re: Mack and Penn make PFF Top 100
"I definitely want to get after the quarterback more this year," said Mack, per ESPN.com. "I got some hits (in 2014), but people didn't really see what I can do. Those sack numbers I had (four total) really weren't me. At the end of the day, you want people to see you at your best."
looks like he's gonna be our guy getting after the QB based on the draft, statements from the coaching staff and from his quote above.
I like the meat we have up front. Just wish we had an interior tackle who could get to the QB.

was going to give this it's own thread and all considering that we want to give this forum a chance to grow.
However, I just see it as more of the same type of gloating that is going into this thread.
Very pleased to see Carr at 11 over Bridgewater.
Particularly because I have a some friends from Minnesota and it's become a thing between us.
I can concede Bridgewater had the better year (for different reasons of course) but I'm taking Carr moving forward.

I think most non-Minnesota football fans are on the same page. Problem is that fantasy perception tends to skew into real-life. With fantasy players, its hard to argue Russell Wilson is an elite QB and Matthew Stafford isn't.
