It's hard to dislike this trade. Betimit brings some versatility and some pop off the bench, which has been lacking big time. And while our pen isn't the strong part of the team, Proctor just turns my stomach. Walk after walk, home run after home run. If our bullpen is shaky, we don't need to hold onto crappy relievers just for the sake of having relievers. Plus the way Torre has used him (most IP of all relievers since opening day 2006), he isn't going to hold up forever. Now we bring in Joba to replace him, or Gagne AND Joba. It's a win win.

Betimit will take away ABs from Cairo more than anybody else

This team has a dramatically improved bench from opening day. Betemit, Duncan, Doug, Molina, Damon/Giambi(the one who isn't DH-ing that day), Cairo and then when the rosters expand we can bring up Gardner for the 4th outfielder duties and pinch running. I like this deal a lot. Procter is done, and Betemit is on the upswing. Plus we have a couple guys in the minors that can step right in with Britton and Edwar. Not to mention the Joba stuff. Great move. -Jitpal

Edit: Buster Olney of ESPN confirms the deal -Jitpal

This trade would have been a plus IMO if gagne would have come our way in a separate deal and yes I know there's still plenty of time but I doubt we get gagne wince texas is asking for one of our 2 young guns in hughes and chamberlain..

If Joba comes up instead of us landing Gagne, that is still a huge huge upgrade from Proctor.

I'm just saying we should have found a way to get rid of farnsworth instead of proctor since proctor was at least effective from time to time....

I'm eager to see what Betemit can do. It's surprising that a guy who can play middle infield and has put up OPS's in the 800s a few times hasn't been given a real chance at starting. And frankly, it's high time Andy Phillips stopped getting at-bats.

Trust me, they tried incredibly hard. Nobody would give anything of value for Farnsworth. I personally would've taken nothing for him, not only for his lack of production but because of how he treats his teammates and Torre.

Andy is on an 11 game hit streak or something. He is also batting .300+. I think we should ride his wave as far as it can take us then plug in either Damon or Betemit. Whoever is better defensively and then replace them in the late innings with Doug when he gets back. -Jitpal

Even with the hit streak, Phillips still having a season that's mediocre at best for a first baseman (.770 OPS; the .300 average is really misleading). And judging from past performance, I'm betting he hits a wall again real soon. Betemit is fairly versatile defensively so i'm betting he could do a pretty solid job at first.

In no way do I think Andy Phllips is the answer. I'm just saying, he has been hot lately, and we should ride that out. As soon as he starts to fizzle, yank him and put in Betemit. -Jitpal

This is a good move. Betemit definately has some talent, but he just may be a late bloomer who has never really had the best of opportunities to show his stuff.

I liked Proctor, and he has been solid for much of his Yankee setup tenure, but I'm starting to wonder how much longer he has before he starts having arm troubles. Plus, he hasn't been very good lately, and we can do better.

He isn't the only one. Hughes, Roger and Mo also stand up for the hitters. Farns sometimes too, it's just that he has no control so when he throws at someone, it usually winds up right down the middle. Thus, the high rate of home runs. At least his heart's in the right place. -Jitpal

I love this trade. Proctor has been overused and he was incredibly overvalued in this market. Betemit has 25 HR pop and if had a year he was capable of he wouldn't be available for Proctor. Good move by Cashman.

Oh, so now it's about standing up for the hitters? How about getting the opposing hitters out, maybe Proctor should work on that more than retaliation.

he was fine at that too, until torre overused him

so now we trade him, then bring a rook in to potentially ruin his starting career

the game really has passed cash by

 WTF are you talking about? You know I respect you Kandi, but you are overreacting BIG TIME. Proctor was overused which was Torre's fault, but that doesn't change the fact that he has lost all of his command, he could barely help us anymore. As I've said, Joba's starting career will be fine.

And to say the game has passed Cash by is just a flat out joke. He is sticking to his guns and keeping the young guys he has faith in. This is what Yankee fans have been begging for Cashman to do for 5 years. Now he does it and it's a problem.
