Gates vs. Denver
For the second year in a row, the San Diego Chargers will open AFC West play on the road in Denver’s Invesco Field when they face the Broncos on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1:15 p.m. PDT.
In last season’s meeting in the Mile High City, the Chargers handed the Broncos a 41-3 setback that ended San Diego’s three-game losing streak and started the Bolts on the path to their second-straight AFC West title and their third in the last four years. The Chargers swept the series with the Broncos last year and finished the season 5-1 in division play.
The Chargers will be looking for their fifth straight win over the Broncos when the team’s meet on Sunday.
The Chargers have gone 18-6 (.750) in AFC West play the last four seasons (since 2004). They have won two straight division titles and three of the last four. Since the NFL realigned the divisions in 2002, the Chargers are the only AFC West team to win back-to-back titles.
In what appeared to be a meaningless game with the Chargers on their way to clinching the No. 3 AFC playoff seed and the Broncos moving closer to their first sub-.500 season since 1999, San Diego won 23-3 at home in a heated contest on Dec. 24.
The animosity started early in the first quarter following a collision between former Broncos safety John Lynch and Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson after a 2-yard run. Tomlinson’s helmet came off and Lynch took it with both hands and threw it about 10 yards, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Then, with the game out of reach and Rivers already pulled in the fourth quarter, the Chargers’ signal-caller ventured onto the field to yell at Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler following a failed fourth-down pass.
“I’m not going to get into it through you guys, through the media, all week long,” said Rivers, who has thrown seven touchdown passes and only two interceptions while winning all four of his starts against the Broncos.
